Secondment To A Children's Centre

I have just got a job starting in September as a 0.5 teacher in a children's centre. This is initially a secondment until April 2011. Have been to meet the other staff and to have a look round and i think its going to be good. Am really excited but also quite anxious as not entirely sure what my role is going to involve. Am going to be running stay and play, messy play and story sessions...which I am sure will be fine. but I was wondering what other sorts of things people are doing. There is no childcare offered within the centre, it is based on the school site where there is also a pre school. Have spoken to the centre co-ordinator, who has only been there 2 wee…

Hi I need some help... I have two interviews next week, both at children’s centres, and as an outreach worker. Just thinking about interview questions- Fairly confident about ‘Every child Matters’, 5 outcomes, poverty, working with a diverse range of families, Two possible questions not sure about. • How would I encourage families into the centre, ? • What would I do if I saw a parent use unacceptable behaviour towards their child, i.e. hit/ smack? Any other hints tips.. Please

Dear all, I am new to the forum. I would appreciate knowing what advice you are giving settings regarding planning. In particular regarding whether settings should continue to have topics and medium term planning. It's such a sea-change for me to abandon these as I finished my Foundation Mainstream school post after many years last Summer and love all my topics, which were very much those that interest children. They were broad, flexible, included celebrations, seasons, growing, and were cross-curricular. I also had weekly continuous provision planning(which was called CIP Planning of-course). All observations were followed up, either by immediated extension of provis…

Policies

Just wondered what policies you have in your centre for groups etc, and if it is the QT role to write these? I don't mean policies for the link setting, but for the actual Centre eg for parent groups etc. I was just thinking that all the policies that apply to a Nursery probably also should apply to a parent activity group

Okay, so I got my new job (if you will) through my supply agency, they informally interviewed two of us and I got it - I think mainly for my passion of working in children's centres. Anyway, going to the interview from supply I did not really get a job spec, and at first I thought I would just be teaching in the nursery. I was told it was a children's centre Teacher and I will be working 3 hours a day e.g. 8.45 till 11.45 which seems to me that I will just be teaching in the nursery. However, during my interview I was told I will be attending management meetings and that no two days are the same and that it is different from school. I think I am just worrying too much…

Could anyone Managing a children's centre please help me. I am trying to find out how centres can work alongside childminders with regards to sustainability. Or in any capacity really - how do you provide parents with information about your local childminders etc., What facilities do you provide for childminders - Indeed any dealings you have with childminders would be helpful. Thank you

Mobile Toy Library

I have been appointed as the Toy library manager for my children centre, along side my outreach role. Just wondering if there is anyone else out there who is managing or working in a toy library, especially a mobile one. I have received a great amount of information from NATLL which I am sifting through and thought that maybe other FSF members may be able to give me any words of advice that they had wished they had known before starting. Also their best loaned toys/equipment and the least used toys/equipment Sam

Only joined the FSF this evening, and very glad I did. Am hoping to get some adivce! I have taught in Reception for 4 years and have applied for several Nursery teaching positions. I have 2 interviews next week, one of which is in a Children's Centre. Very nervous because I am convinced that I am not going to know all the stuff I should know to do the job. Can anyone help me? If you can give me a list of essential documents I should read before going for the interviews that would be great. Also, what tips can you give me for an activity with the children - was thinking of a hands on 'Going On A Bear Hunt' activity, with coloured fabrics, instruments, and leaves,…
