I went on an extemely interesting course at Early Excellence on Friday, run by Professors Chris Pascal and Tony Bertram. It was all about a new assessment scale for young children that they are currently developing called The AcE Scale. They have identified that there ar four "critical domains" in early learning - skills and attitudes which are proven to be vitally important if children are to become successful and motivated learners in later life. These are: Linguistic and communication skills Attitudes and dispositions Social competence and self esteem Emotional well-being Their overall message was that these are the most important areas that we need to wo…

Our school is thinking of expanding into wrap around care for nursery aged children. As foundation Stage Manager, I am interested in finding out the standards for day care and how we could work in partnership. I am unsure if staff are required to complete observations etc and pass info on to nursery teachers? If anyone has any knowledge of this id be grateful. If this is in the wrong section would a kind person move it please, wasn't sure where to put it Thanks xx

How are the rest of you Children's Centre teachers managing your performance management targets, especially the pupil progress one? I seem to have massive targets given that I work part time in this job and don't do a great deal of actual hands on with the children. What are the rest of you doing?

Observations And Planning In Children's Centre Groups

I've spent a lot of time over the last two years revamping observation, assessment, record-keepng and planning systems in the full daycare nursery within our Centre...a project that is still very much "work in progress"! Over the Christmas break I've been thinking about these systems within all the other groups we have both in the Centre and at other locations - our creches, stay and play sessions, parent and toddler groups, Peeps groups, etc. At the moment our early years outreach workers and the staff in the nursery do different things but I'm thinking that I would like to co-ordinate everything so that all centre staff follow the same guiding principles and practice w…

Children's Centre Policies

Our Children's Centre has a full daycare nursery provision for 0-5 year olds on site but also runs various other groups both within the centre and at other locations in the area, e.g. creches, stay and play, Peeps groups, etc. The nursery obviously has a full set of policies and procedures governing its practice but I'm wondering whether it would be better to have an over-riding set of policies for the Centre as much as possible to ensure consistency across all groups. There would be some policies that would need to be tailored to individual groups I know, but I'm thinking that ones such as Behaviour Management, Child Protection, Equal Opps, Health and Safety could stret…

Help! I have just rec'd a letter inviting me to interview for the above post at a school on Thursday. The school is having a children's centre built which will house a local nursery and opportunity playgroup . There are two classes of 30 Reception children at the school. Is there anyone already doing this role who could help me with some key points I will have to tackle as I have to give a ten minute presentation to all 12 Govenors. I also have to teach a class of 30 for 20 mins with 2 TA's. It seems to be a really funny length of time and it has been a while since I had an interview. Can't decide if we should all do something together on the carpet which involves g…

I have spotted a job for a deputy childcare manager in a children's centre. I have the job description/person spec, it does sound like it would be in the daycare side of the centre. However I was wondering if any of you could give me a bief overview of the job and would welcome any thoughs from the managers too. Plus if I get to the interview stage what sort of questions will be asked compared to a normal nursery nurse post in children's centres if possible. Thank you. Beth

Hi there. Has anyone else tried to simplify the guidance given out by LEAs for parents filling in their school preference admission forms? We find that our parents (most of whom dont speak or read English) have real problems and consequently this year we have a glut of children who have been allocated schools too far away from home and whose parents have made the decision to keep them at home until a place becomes available closer. With admissions form being sent out any time now, we are trying to put together a leaflet explaining the process in very simple. Has anyone done anything similar?
