Hi everyone, I haven't posted on here before, but am really hoping someone out there can help me. My setting uses a very outdated and old fashioned way of planning and we really need to update it, but I'm not sure where to start. HELP!! I'd like the planning to be focussed on the children's interests and for it to evolve week to week. Any ideas or suggestions welcome!!!

I have a member of staff who constantly talks about herself in the third person to the children. The effect of this is that most children know her name, although they use it for all of us so they are confused. I would like to have something to give her about the importance of speaking in a normally correct way, especially to children with speech problems as I feel that is really important but don't want to seem unnecessarily picky as there have been lots of issues with this staff member. I have info from speech therapists but none mention this issue. Can anyone help?

I fancy doing something like making patterned wallpaper with the children then having a board outside where they can cut, paste, and hang the wallpaper. Has anyone ever done anything like this before?

Hi, Im a reception teacher who may be asked to teach in nursery next year. Can anyone explain the difference between assessment in reception and in nursery? Is their some kind of formal assessment at the end of the year? Do you assess against the same profile points? etc If anyone can summarise the basic differences would be much appreciated! Thanks Louise

My Nursery is planning a topic, "London and the Olympics" for the Summer term. Thought we could incorporate Queen's Diamond Jubilee and historical things in London and also the Olympic Games. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas? Jacquie

Hello! Apologies for the amount of questions I am about to ask, I have researched as much as I can but feeling more and more overwhelmed! I work in a village Pre-School. I am the assitant there. We have had the Early Years Improvement team in who have practically said we are doing everything wrong. We had monthly planning where we would have a set topic i.e Around the world, Transport etc. It was very basic. We were told to scrap that including scrapping song time, story time, snack time, tidy up time etc to make the nursery day 'flow better and be more holistic'. I understand this and we have adapted a rolling snack time and have been listening to the children about w…

Hi all I know for most of us the main focus will now be on the new EYFS but I just had on small question about linking sounds and letters paperwork. Does anybody use the sheets which have all the activities and strands on them that are for highlighting when children can do that particular strand or have done a particular activity within the programme? Obviously we use the programme but we track it through with observations, learning journeys and planning. The paperwork seems rather a lot for what is essentially one strand in one area of the whole, although I acknowledge that it is important. Just wondered what other peoples opinion was.

Messy Play

Hi you wonderful people, i thought i'd enquire whether you knew about this old policy of not playing with food, in messy play because of all the starving children in other places around the world? It came up in a team meeting, that years ago, i do mean years that settings were not allowed to play with jelly/pasta/mash potato etc According to the staff member who raised this, settings were asked to sign to say they wouldnt use food items to play with. Can any of you shine a light on this? Many thanks

Nursery Help!

Hi everyone, I apologise in advance for the large post but as you may be able to tell I am in a bit of a 'flap' I am currently a Reception teacher who has been asked to support a teacher who has been put into nursery recently with NO early years experience and is seemingly beginning to sink. I am currently only in my second year of teaching, so I am still learning the ropes and deciding what works and doesn't work myself. However next week I am expected to work with the head to change the planning and general day to day goings on of the nursery as I have recently done in Reception. To give you some background this is how the nursery currently runs; *…
