Assessment Week

Hi everyone! In the dark, dark, past when we had 'rigid' half-termly topics I used to allocate the last week of each half-term as 'assessment week'. The time was spent 'catching up' on any assessments or observations that were needed with key children; the children spent much of the time in 'free, child initiated play'. The assessment week happened in the last week leading up to a half-term, so in the 'Christmas', 'Easter' and 'Summer' terms it was set mid-term because of the busy period leading up to Christmas etc. It worked well. This 'fizzled out' when the curriculum became more child-friendly and less topic led. However, I have decided to reinstate the general…

St David's Day

I came across a lovely idea for St David's Day, but would like to make it more 'child friendly' - make a Welsh traditional hat using a paper cup, add a rim and paint it black. I rarely 'offer' such adult led activities so am not too worried about this ; but does anyone have any good ideas to make it less adult led? I intend to show pictures of traditional Welsh costume (to cover KUW - communities). Any thoughts appreciated!

Hi before half term our children were really interested in animals. So when we came back after half term we set up a role play vets and planned animal themed activities and planned to do some more next week. However, since they came back the children do not seem interested in animals anymore and have taking great interest in making music, singing and dancing! and there are also a couple of children really interested in making race tracks to race their cars. what should we do? I feel we should forget about the animal activities and follow their interest in music and make instruments etc. and follow the cars interest by providing resources to make tracks etc. for t…

Just looking for other peoples views on planning. With so much conflicting advice on what to do I am now beginning to question how we plan. We were advised that a long term and medium term plan is no longer necessary so we did away with these. We now plan for the children i.e at a planning meeting each week , each keyperson selects 4 of their key children to concerntrate on and activities are planned around them. We also adapt role play etc to the children's interests which comes from staff writing these on a central sheet during the week along with certain events or things that may have happened in a child's week. We have a weekly planning sheet showing con…

Ok so this is my first post..I hope I do it right! I have to resort to asking everyone for advice on here as am currently incredibly confused! I finished my NQT year in Jan (very much missing my NQT time). I am in a 78 place Nursery attached to a school. I have 46 children in the morning and 46 in the afternoon. There is always 4 members of staff present at anyone time, all of whom are very experienced, however they have been working at the school for a long time, so have become stuck in their ways a little. My current planning has been adapted from the Reception planning as my Head wanted it to be similar but my problem is that I don't feel we follow the children's in…

Hi wise ones we are going to be exploring Africa next term following on from an interest in wild animals. Does anybody know of a simple drum that can be made using recycled materials, to then be used for rhythmn and movement with them. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Learning Journeys

Hi All A Learning Journey is a wonderful way of showing a child's progress from the moment they start at your setting. It would be good to hear from you ways in which you develop your learning journeys, for example, who contributes to the information that is being gathered - children? parents? key person? other providers? Any difficulties or what works well. It's good to share
