Jolly Phonics?
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi all, I am going back into nursery teaching after a year away and can't wait to start my new job in a fantastic private nursery. The only thing worrying me is that the old teacher of the 3-5 year olds used to do Jolly Phonics with the children and some of the more capable ones were reading Oxford Reading Tree books. As soon as I heard the word 'phonics' I froze in fear - I had always thought that unless the children are really able, phonics should be left for reception, and in nursery the focus should be on Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds, particularly initial sounds, rhyming, distinguishing sounds etc. It seems to go against everything I have been taught, especially for …

My pre-school takes children from 2 years until they go to school, so 4+. We do have lots of books, but I'm getting a bit bored as we seem to read the same ones quite often! Just wondered what your favourite children's books are for this age group - hoping for some new ideas. Thank you!

Hello peeps, We're having our Nursery roof replaced starting next week) - this is going to take about a month ... isn't going to be a problem as we have lots of outside space that won't be affected (we're very lucky, I know) Anyway ... obviously the children will be very interested in what's going on and so I want to have a range of activities, investigations etc up my sleeve that will enable us and them to work inside the Nursery acknowledging what is going on outside the Nursery! My ideas so far are ... 3 Little pigs (and related activities) - exploring straw, sticks etc and their limitations for building ... puppet shows ... dramas etc exploring triangles i…

Hi I'm trying to revamp our planning at the moment it's very old and hard to understand at times! a brief guide to what we do! hold 1/2 termly meetings to plan for next 1/2 term ( i want to hold these at least fortnightly) the activities then go on asheet and is put up in the kitchen area for all to see. describes what is in each area, e.g malleable, paint, messy (these are the same for the week) WE plan have a theme for the whole of that coming half term... needs changing. (6-7 week very bored by the end with same theme/topic) then we have tried introducing plods.. but its not working at all because of the timescale...and staff are confused about what to…

Write Dance

I have bought a copy of Write Dance in the early years with a view to using it with my nursery children but I'm finding it a bit difficult to follow. Does anyone else use it?? Do you read the story, listen to the song doing the movements then provide opportunities for the children to "scrimble" straight afterwards??? I'm not sure how to use it. I can imagine doing the song and actions with the children but how do you encourage the scrimble movements they suggest?? Just demonstrate them to the children as you play alongside them? Any help would be appreciated.
