New Forum Topic?

I am looking for tips and ideas for children who have English as an additional language. I get few EAL children in my nursery class and would like some general advice about how to provide for their needs. I have searched the forum but nothing is coming up. Wouldn't it be great to have a forum specifically for EAL? It doesn't seem to be included in the Forum Index. Am I looking in the wrong place? There must be lots of nurseries and pre-schools out there who have a very high percentage of EAL children; and a lot of expertise to share! Any thoughts or ideas?

Hi, We are planning to do a mix of activities in our (school) nursery. Many are going to be child led, facilitated by the key group leader, but we are also going to have some that aim to teach specific skills. Does anyone have a list of skills for nursery age eg holding a pencil, beginning to use scissors, washing hands, throwing a ball?? I amplanning to make a list but I don't want to if someone has done this before

Hi this is my first time on this forum. I have read so many helpful replies on the other forum topics I am really hoping you could help me get sorted!! I work in a British international school and have been working in reception for the last four years. I suddenly landed the responsibility of being transferred to nursery to help get it sorted for two big international inspections this year. I am foundation stage trained but it has been a few years since I have been in nursery and I am feeling a bit rusty and out of then loop! I was wondering if there is anyone who could help get me back up to speed. the main areas are correct forms of assessment, entry assessment (a must n…

Child-friendly Topic Title Needed

Hi! I am 'planning' to introduce the topic of 'Our Senses' in September, but would like to use a more child-friendly title. Does anyone have any good ideas? I am re-vamping my planning and for the long-term I have thought about 'Toys', 'Bags and boxes', 'Seeds', 'Water' and 'Shells'. That said, I would really like to have some exciting topics this coming year; so, does anyone have any really good tried and tested ideas for topics that comes with a 'child-friendly' title?! Thanks in advance!

Simplfying The Observation Process
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi, We had a visit from our EY advisors today and I have been advised to 'simplfy' our observation process by using sticky labels etc... I am not keen on the idea although I would like to cut down on the written work that is being done and was interested in what other settings do. We currently use 'Wow moment' obs books and planned activity obs sheets which are then re-written into learning journals. My first thought was how messy the journals would look with loads of post-it notes sticking out of them!

Hi Everyone I am trying to document a term by term breakdown of how planning, provision and routines alter as the year progresses in a Nursery class. I think we would all agree, that walking into any setting in September and again in June/July would look and feel very different. Getting it down on paper is challenging. Does anyone have any experience of writing such a forecast, or any ideas where I might look for support? Experienced EY's people may have done something similar??? I will of course share a completed document. Thanks

I am wonering if anyone can suggest a more "correct way" to name different levels of a mixed ability planning group to indicate differentiation, i have previously used higher ability, middle ability and lower abiltity (done as standard by my previous setting) but would like to use something abit more positive and motivating, especially avoiding lower ability. Basically a planning goal from 3 age ranges of the EYFS is set eveytime for each goal the child is working towards. I am thinking of maybe just a random colour coding and then relating this to the age groups so if highlighted in pink it is 16-24m (lower) green 22-36m (middle) blue 30-50m (higher). ideas? advice?
