Hi. I have just started supervising a playgroup after many years in a day nursery, I would apreciste advice on how other playgroups observe children / gather evidance to log in on the EYFS profile in such a short space of time? (we have the children for 1.75 hours 2 days a week) currently the setting expect a full observation for each activitiy, I feel this is to much for such a short period of time and the staff are unable to keep up with this and little evidance is getting collected. In my previous setting we had the majority of the children from 8 - 6 and were only required to do one observation a week. Ideally I would like to introduce anecdotal (post it) notes, …

This may seem like a really weird thing to do but stay with me on it - it works! We all have staff who don't want to put any extra effort in or develop their knowledge (which really annoys me!) so I have started sticking snippets of information on the wall opposite the toilet (a captive audience!) to make them think about their practice. An example is Dressed in a knight's outfit he can only be a knight. However with a tea cosy on his head and stick in hand he can be a knight now and a fireman later-or anything he pleases. Even the most disinterested have to read them and have even commented that they are a good idea. It has also been suggested to me to put prompt…

Temporary Pre-schoolers

Evening, We have two Canadian brothers taking up places at Pre-school just from Autumn to Christmas whilst they are in the country for 6 months. One of them is already 4 so should really be starting school but he will not be starting school in the US until the following year(when he is 6) and will be returning to his 'kindergarten' in January. Should we still be going to the trouble of setting up and completing learning journals for these 2 morning a week temporary children? Seems such a waste of time recording 'development matters' levels as it will be meaningless back in the US system. The parents are not expecting any formal recording which begs the question …

Learning Journeys

From September we will be putting obs, photos etc in a scrapbook style learning journey in line with what a lot of other settings are doing. Obviously, this would make it easier for children/parents to share and contribute to the LJ's although I am worried about the journeys being taken home and not brought back in. Does this seem to be a problem for any of you? Also, last year we introduced 'communication books' which have worked pretty well, but the committee do not see the need for shared learning journeys and 'communication books' as they feel the 2 could be combined. Any views on the above? Perhaps we could keep the 'communication books' for children wh…

Planning

How much planning do you have on display for parents to see? I have always put all my planning on the noticeboard alongside the newsletter and other information. However, now that my planning has become less topic-based and more child-led I am not sure what is 'appropriate' to be on display. At the end of each week, I look at what the children have been doing (taking information from the PLOD sheet) and record this, along with the PLODs on the planning sheet for the following week. If it is possible i.e. the resources were to hand, then some PLODs would have already been 'completed'. If it was not possible to find the resources to enhance learning, then it would be 'pla…

Observation, Assessment And Planning

This is the weekly planning sheet we use in our playgroup (NI). We have been in operation for 6 months now and due to return in September with 7 of the previous children (only turned 3 when started with us) and 7 new children. On advice from our Early Years Advisor we have been told to try and make the attached section of learning outcomes user friendly ie language we use states clearly what we intend to achieve from the resources we put out under each heading. We have no experience in this at all and have I guessed tried to go with what we thought was expected of us! We have also been told in our assessment and observations to try and make a note of little things …

Can anyone recommend where I can find long term planning related to the areas of continuous provision. For example I need "adult role in the role play area" "language to model in the messy play area" etc I am new to the site but it looks great so far!!

This 'new Fangled' Planning!

I'm still getting to grips with the 'new-style' planning - well it's new to me at least! What do you think ... I do not 'plan' for the short-term (only retrospectively, i.e. observe, assess, plan) - and am led by the children Medium-term planning shows all continuous provision, incl resources, opportunities linked to the 6 areas of learning, the adult role and possible questions (I hope I've got that right!). Now for the LTP - is this where I show 'everything else'? Including ... Six half-termly topics (albeit very 'fluid') Children: e.g. establish rules, settling-in, BLAST, Circle Time etc Visitors: Fire brigade, Father Christmas etc School: e.g. Perfor…
