Hi All I know this has probably been done to death but.... I really need to know how settings achieve getting all of this done at this time of year. I know that key persons should not take folders/profiles home with them (I thought that this was because of confidentiality reasons) but this is the only way that we manage to keep childrens profiles up to date. I now hear that the PLA guidelines suggest that all work has to be done in setting and there should be no need for anybody to do any work- paperwork or other outside of working hours. As Supervisor, if I didn't do work outside working hours my setting would close. I accept that I do get paid a li…

A Learning Story

Does anyone use 'A Learning Story' as a form of observation. This is a new concept for me as I have always used the 'ten minute child observation' (amongst other types of observation of course). How do you 'complete/use' these? - as a narrative observation or bullet points - any information would be useful! I'd really love to see a completed 'Learning Story' if anyone has one that they are willing to share.

Traffic Light Assessment System

hi, Does anyone on this forum use a 'traffic light' system to record whether they have concerns about a child i.e. 'green' if no concerns, 'amber' if some concerns and 'red' if there are serious concerns about a childs development. I heard about this system from a university colleague but have been unable to source a copy/proforma on which to base my own system. As manager of a private nursery i think a system using a visual as well as written assessment would enable me to get a quick over view of all my children without going through their whole file and would enable my colleagues to quickly chart improvements or deteriorations in development. Any other ideas wo…

Ok ladies....................need some help please! I am planning a heuristic play session for my 2-4 year olds. I thought about having either blocks ( we have lots of lovely cp ones, both the ordinary sized ones, plus hollow blocks and the mini ones. This will provide for open-ended play......................but is this enough??? Or, I thought about obtaining loads of boxes, lots of different sizes and offering those for a whole session, to see what happens? I suspect that I might get a lot of whoopingand hollering with the boxes, maybe them just being jumped on........or of course it might go really well! Any other ideas, or thoughts on these two ?

Learning Intentions

We are a pre-school offering sessions for 60 children between 2 and 4. We have been trialling an child led system of planning, whereby we only plan according to the children's interests but we are finding that this really isn't working. The observations that are being written are repetitive and not really focused enough. In September we are going back to having loose themes for planning and we would like to introduce learning intentions for specific observations. In September, we are going to be doing "Marvellous Me!" and I have lots of learning intentions in mind, but was wondering how many LI's you would look for in each area for the half term? I have identified LI'…

Each year I teach 26, 3/4 year olds who will just remain in nursery for one year. Myself and the NA continually record chn's work, take photo's ect and complete chn's journey books. When we look back over each past year's work rather than simplifying things we seem to give ourselves more work and additional record sheets-which just seem to double up or triplicatethe same info. Has anyone tried using a sheet for each of the six ares of the curric. broken down into very simple measurable tasks linked to early learning goals that we can tick off for each child as we gain this info from our observations. I feel this would help us see better the areas we have neglected i…

hi - just thinking of how we can 'jiggle' our sessions a little in sept, things have become a little stale with regards to small group activities. we always have a small group activity, the children are broken down into groups of approx 5 and each group has a seperate adult led activity. this is fine in itself - but the activity doesnt usually have a 'purpose', its rarely linked to next steps, and is usually just grabbing something from the cupboard that they can sit and play. im thinking about extending free play, and am thinking that any next steps needed could be covered during this time ( 9 times out of time it is anyway) if there is a need for a more structu…

Photos For Learning Journeys
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi everyone What do you do with regard to taking photos of children for their own learning journey that include their friends/peers? Do you obtain permission from all parents? I have never considered this - but, with Ofsted around the corner, know that I need to do something. Clearly, the learning journeys would look rather 'sad' if I only included photos of children in 'solitary' play! Could anyone help with the 'wording' of a letter to send out to parents? Thanks in advance!
