Phases Of Development
by Guest- 2 replies

When looking at children's learning, I sometimes struggle to decide which phase to place an activity into when highlighting the phase in their learning journeys. E.g. a child playing with a water spray says "We're making a river" - KUW, Place - but 30-50m or 40-60+m? Of course, it could also be included in other areas of learning as well. Comments appreciated! Chris

Parents, Classroom Ela And Eyfs!

Recently we had our ELA in and she has overhauled our planning and pretty much everything about our setting. I am fully on board and think her ideas are fab. She said to have continuous areas of provision e.g paint, construction, books, outdoor the same each week with free choice of resources that cover the 6 areas in each of these. To this add enhancements based on childrens interests and needs e.g Jonny is interested in diggers and dumpers but never goes near the painting table so maybe put some diggers in there for him to explore tracks etc. This makes sense to me and we had been heading this way with our free choice craft table for craft. However parents have been co…

Morning all Report-writing season is underway and I'm due to get started with the reports for my 63 nursery children. Before I do, I'm interested to know what kinds of formats other nursery teachers use for their reports... The previous nursery teacher shared her reports from last year with me, but they seem a bit formal. For example, "Fred* recognises some 2D shapes and numbers to 10 consistently and is beginning to recognise numbers to 20 with some inconsistencies. He is also beginning to show an understanding of simple calculation and combining two groups to make a total... He recognises 16 graphemes and knows their corresponding phoneme and is beginning to identi…

Planning Oudoor

Hi I am in the process of developing a planning sheet for outdoor. I would be looking to cover each area of learning. As a team, we would then evaluate the intersets of the children (weekly) to see what should be added as enhancements, dropped or developed new each coming week. Does anyone have such a planning sheet they could share? I have tried opening Alistairs on "ABC Does", but will not open for me. Thanks

Hi All I work in a nursery attached to a primary school. We have 52 children morning and afternoon. When I worked in a nursery school (my last job) our children were expected to work with their key person for 15 minutes each day, engaging in a focused activity either outdoor or indoor. Now (new job) the children have the choice to engage or not in the focused activity planned by the teachers. Of course some children never choose to become involved in adult directed activities and are happy to play in the continuous provision. They see working with an adult as "work" and not play. So, I would like to start a discussion about how we justify the time spent wr…

Does anyone know where I can get images for a visual timetable for pre-school please? I'm after simple black and white images of story time, snack time etc, but I've looked everywhere with no luck. Thanks.

Confused!

Hi, I am trying to get my head around planning around childrens interests but not getting it at all! We have 70 children who come on different days/sessions. We have around 25 children each session. We only have a small hall so equipment is planned so that we provide all the areas we are supposed to e.g sand/water, painting, free craft, smallworld, book area within our hall. Even if we planned for each childs interests and also asked them what to get out we could not actually get out 25 different things as we simply don't have the space!! Also we would have to pack away everything at the end of the morning, get different stuff out again in the afternoon as we have 25 new…

How Do You Plan For Children's Interests While Covering All Areas
by Guest terrydoo73- 11 replies

I know this might sound thick but I just don't get this idea of catering for children's interests so perhaps someone could explain the basics. Say for instance in the construction area or small world - what do you have for continuous provision ie what is in there all the time?? We have 6 cubby holes to cover both areas so what can we put in each? We have basically got it all wrong according to our Early Years Advisor who visited us yesterday and she told us in no uncertain terms that she would be back within the next week and we need to think seriously about planning our Playgroup better!! I mean do we just wait until children express an interest in say firem…
