What's The Name Of This Observation?
by Guest TinklePrincess- 6 replies

Hi everyone... I'm not sure if I'm putting this in the right section - I get confused! I'm rather ashamed of myself, to be honest, as I should know this but I can't think of the word for the life of me! What's the name of the form of observation where you get a diagram of the room and sort of track how many children are in each area at certain times and how long they stay there etc... sort of like a tracker observation? Thank you

Observations And Schemas In Children

Hi there, Could someone please help me. I'm doing an Early Years degree and we have to write a reflective account on 1 child looking at schemas. 1st of all the child I am looking at seems to have an enveloping and trajectory schema, he loves painting, playing with sand/water, throwing things, pushing and pulling things. Hiding under tables, going in the cars outside etc does this sound about right? And secondly, we have to use two recognised observation techniques to get our data, Ive looked at a few books which mention: - narrative/written observations - checklists - tracking - sociograms - histograms - bar charts and pie charts - event sampling/ti…

Adult Directed Art Activities
by Guest- 18 replies

I would really welcome a straw poll on this. A staff member is very keen to do a couple of specific art activities (i.e. make a card exactly like this) for mother's day. This is harking back to the old days at our setting where we had a great deal of 'fluffy duck syndrome', i.e. adults telling children how to 'do' an art activity, and children all making the same. Ironically I had been helping set up a new 'art zone' with tons of different resources on offer, so that the children could initiate their own art. I spoke to our leader this morning and suggested she might have to put her foot down and say that this kind of thing isn't really appropriate. But I'm won…

Qualifications In Nursery

Hi Please can someone clarify this? Does a teaching assistant in a school based nursery, need to have an early years qualification or is a general teaching and learning NVQ ok? For example, if there is one teacher and three TAs all with teaching and learning NVQs, is this ok? Is it requirement to have an EY TA or just best practice? Hope that makes sense! Many thanks JB x

Observation Checklist
by Guest terrydoo73- 3 replies

We are working from a sheet which details the observation noted ie shows care and concern for other children, is aware of the playgroup routines etc but have been told there is another sheet available whereby you can see clearly what observations are being missed out on by individual children. Basically what we do at the moment is take a note of what we see and then add the comment above to each observation at the end of the session. I am very aware that one of my particular children is lacking in certain areas but if I had some sort of checklist to see what it is then I could focus on developing this with the child. Hopefully you understand what I mean and maybe could…

did I read on here....or did I imagine it??.... that some clever person had looked at DMs and normal continuous provision and Nursery routines to see how many DMs were generally absorbed into normal Nursery life, as it were. they had made a chart to plot this, I think. Can any one tell me where to find it? Thanks very much! xx

Literacy - Book Bags - Do You Use These?
by Guest terrydoo73- 14 replies

I have an idea to improve our literacy in playgroup but I getting negative feeling from my Deputy so want opinions of others. Remember I am pre-preschool age ie just turned 3. I would like to introduce book bags every Monday whereby the children choose a book from our library and take it home. We would be asking parents to read this book with their child at least once during the week and return it the following Monday to be changed again. Our children do respond well to rhymes and we have managed to introduce 12 since we opened in January with the children able to recite and do the actions to each - parents have commented on these as they hear them at home. …

Hi everyone Can I just ask do you include the children who need to be observed on you planning sheet? I have seen this somewhere and just wondering if anyone else does it too?

Hi we are exploring people that help us as well as occupations, following the children's interest. The children really enjoy activities using envelopes with mark making tools, so next week we are going to have the role play area as a post office, with stampers, forms to fill in, boxes of varying sizes with brown paper, wrapping paper, string, sellotape, masking tape. The children can make their own letters, pictures and we can walk in small groups to the post box to send to their homes. Any others ideas as my minds gone to mush would be great :rolleyes
