Involving Parents At Outset

We recently had an Ofsted inspection and one of our recommendations was: . review the systems for sharing information with parents at the outset to ensure that information relating to what children can already do is more effectively used in order to establish clear starting points. Fair point I thought. We currently observe new children for approximately 6 weeks then use our own judgement to assess where their starting point is. However, I have been trying to devise a 'ticklist' 'questionnaire' 'form' ANYTHING to ask parents where they would put their child. I have tried looking at the development matters and asking basic questions around those. But, h…

Hi Can anyone tell me how you please show planning for children's interets? Does each child have their own individual plans? I am trying to make my planning easier but just feel it is always us selecting resources as very few of the children will acess them independantly. Many thanks

Hello everyone! A lot of the children in my setting are really into cutting at the moment, due I think to the scissors being more accessible recently They are just snipping really, sometimes sticking onto card or putting the bits into envelopes to take home, but generally just cutting for the sake of cutting. For Chinese New Year we made a huge dragon and some of these children were involved in cutting along zig zag lines to make the teeth, and they really enjoyed this. I'm now struggling with what to offer them next. Any bright ideas please?

I've been thinking today about the practice in my nursery class. I'm not happy with what we're doing at the moment - I don't feel that we're using the environment to its full potential at all, and I really dislike using pre-planned topics rather than going with the children's interests. First I'll get to the issue of the outdoors... I was reading 'Outdoor Learning in the Early Years' by Helen Bilton and was struck by this quote: "The use of bikes outside is a classic example of poor child-initiated activity, where the same children jump on the same bikes, ride round and round every day and learn very little. Children are choosing to do this and it is not an …

Am looking for a copy of an individual learning plan for children if possible. We ahd a visit form our early ears development officer today and I am now in the process of overhauling my planning. She suggested this form and advised it was on the training disk for the EYFS course . But cannot find my disk. If anyone has one they are willing to share I would be very grateful

When children start nursery there parents/carers fill in a registration form with details of allergies and any medical conditions, is this enough or for example if a child is allergic to milk do the parents have to fill in a care plan with the setting? ongoing argument over this, thanx

Hi there New here, I became a childminder last year and although I'm really enjoying it I've not been doing the obs. Now I suppose that isn't strictly true because I put them in the daily diarys BUT not been putting them on a sheet. I've been taking photos of the mindees and then linked them up to the daily diarys. Now I'm panicing as I haven't had my ofsted report yet and I feel so unprepared. Apart from register, policys and procedures and a rough risk assesement sheet I'm worried that I'll get a poor even though I do look after the children's needs. Help I think I'm sinking!

Here I am again - worrying as usual!! We are into our 3rd week of new playgroup and there are just the 2 of us paid members of staff - myself and my deputy. We do have a volunteer committee member who is not involved in planning or obs etc. So this is what we do at present. I start at 8.30 am, my deputy at 9 and the children come in at 9.15. So that gives me time to get the water tray filled, paint in the pots, toilets checked for cleanliness (others use the hall premises after we are gone) and new toilet rolls, paper towels etc put out, snack trolley set up and jug with cups for drinking water set out in the playroom, organise the activities we do towards the end…
