I keep hearing about learning stories and I'm keen to know more. Please could someone tell me in very simple terms what they are, how they would differ from the profiles (books with photos, post its, etc.) that we already use, and how much staff time you would estimate they take to do. I'm all for doing paperwork if it makes a genuine difference to children at our setting. However, I already feel staff spend too much time and give too much focus to what we call profiles (I know these are not end of foundation stage ones, but they do it in a very similar way to what you get in reception). The whole 'grab a camera he's meeting a learning goal' really worries me. …

Hi all, just wondering how many observations are being carried out on average over a term. We are a 39 place each session nursery and I have just taken over as the teacher. We do flex hours and so it is all very tricky. With up to 80 children to observe track etc and some staff going overboard on incidentals and highlighting objectives, it just seems like we are writing the same thing in too many different places! We do one focussed ob, then 10 incidentals per half term. On top of all assessments and tracking it's all too much and the staff are constantly behind with their learning journeys or some go overboard and it is a mass of photos and a million obs which don't actu…

Help - Guns!
by Guest- 6 replies

Hope someone out there can help us. We have a quite a few boys who are playing guns, using everything they can to make them and running around shooting everything in sight and being quite rough with some of the children who do not want to join in and who don't like being shot! Does anyone have any ideas/activities as to how to develop this further as it is obviously something that they need to explore and we don't want to stop their play but are unsure of how to support them. Thanking you all for your help

Precut Stick And Paste

We have been told by our Development Worker who advises us on how to plan, observe and assess pre-pre-school children not to give the children precut stick and paste handouts. We were planning to do a mitten so how would you suggest we approach this - it is along the basis of the book. The whole theme for this month is about self care ie learning how to dress properly and thought of this idea but wondered how we could get around this problem - what about dashes to join up or drawing around their hands? They are only just turned 3 years of age.

Individual Learning Plans

Hello, as mentioned in my other post, I've just come back from mat leave, and my nursery have indroduced individual learing plans. Does everyone do these now?? and how do they link into your weekly planning? With our planning we have 3 focus children that the week is planned around there interests, but the room Im in has 24 children full/part time. this will not even cover each child once a month. Each individual plan has suggested activities for the childs interests under each of the areas of learning, but I cant see the point of these plans if only three of the plans are being used each week. In my mind the keyperson shoud plan for there keygroup and then…

Tidy Up Time Pictures

Having attended a course the week before last conducted by a High Scope worker I was given the idea of having a daily routine done in pictures so the children could understand what was happening next. I have managed to get black and white photos of children so far - mum bringing the child to playgroup, groups of children playing together, a child eating and drinking, children playing with balls and a climbing frame then finally finished with 3 pictures, 1 with children dancing to music another with children doing a painting and the third children sitting around listening to a story. I have obviously left out one and probably the most important one - tidy up time! …

Coded Observations?
by Guest- 1 follower

Hi I am currently considering buying the Qed 'trackers' to monitor the childrens learning journey. At the moment we use a home-made learning journey that just states the development matters. What I would like to know is........... Do you 'code up' your observations - or, do you just know which development matter each photo and observation refers to. I am more than confident that my staff know which development matter they are refering to when they write a sticker or take a picture. However, at the start of the EYFS our local authority early years service diligently sat us all down as we 'coded up' our development matters. i.e. PSED DA 6b (PSED obvious, DA…

Hello. we are going to set up book bags for the 4 year olds. I want to include a card, hopefully a different card each week, with advice for parents, suggestions on questions to ask, etc Before I start I thought I might be able to save time (!) by seeing if anyone already has anything like this they could share?? Many thanks for any help x
