Wondered if there's anyone who could give me some advice about a little boy in our pre school setting? He started with us in September and is now 2 years 9 months. He cannot stop putting things in his mouth - all toys (he loves cars), dice, stones, anything small in our tuf spot, - actually they don't have to be small, they're just the things we worry about him swallowing - paint brushes covered in paint - and today he has started licking wet paintings on the dryer. He is also very into "kissing" the other children - on the body - he grabs them round the neck and goes in for a kiss with an open mouth which unfortunately sometimes turns into a bite. He has bitt…

Hi Can I just ask how you link you observations in your learning journals? Do you just use the areas of learning or do you link into development matters? If you link into development matters do you handright them or do you have another method? I am trying to make it easier for practitioners and I am currently debating on typing up all the dev matters and printing them out on stickers but if I can save myself a lot of time i would lol. There was no learning journals or even observations in place when i took over and have some staff reluctant to do them though I am getting them but would rather make is easier for them when linking observations etc in l.j. …

HI all you lovely people This is a bit of a 64,000 dollar question relating to quantities of written observations. Following an interesting discussion I said I would seek the views of a 'wider audience' so here I am asking you for your thoughts! How many writtne observations i(with next steps) in total would you say was 'sufficient' for each child per term in pre-school. I know it is a rather broad question and many factors need to be considered but during my discussion a wide range of suggestions were made including 2 per area of learning, one for each aspect of each area of learning and many more ideas with quite a wide range in quantities! Just int…

Evening all!! I am about to put forward a proposal with regards to a book about Learning Journeys My questions to those of you who use learning journeys are these: *What do you think is so great about them/ why are you happy to use them as part of your practice? *What do you wish someone had told you before you started using them? * What do you personally include in these books? To those who don't use them: *What would you want to know to enable you to confidently use a learning journey in your setting? I would be grateful of your thoughts please to put forward a proposal for a useful book!!!!!!!!! Thankyou

Hi, i have a child with us who is displaying signs of being very intelligent, she is approaching 4yrs but can already write names and words, knows numbers, shapes, colours, is exploring addition and subtraction and is now taking an interest in reading. It is nice for me to help her learning but I am concerned with how far to take this as I don't want her to get bored when she gets to reception year and may come to a standstill. Parents are pleased with her progress and happy to let her go as far as she wants but have same concerns as me. I have spoken to our SENCO who has advised to do obs in each area to ensure that she is all round meeting levels for her age, but she is…

I am teaching an Arts unit around the drama unit "The Toymaker's Workshop" from Jo Boulton's and Judith Ackroyd's book "Role Play in the Early Years - The Toymaker's Workshop". I'm looking for any links with this unit across all arts areas - e.g. music, song, dance, visual art as well as drama. Any resources e.g. verse, songs titles / words, dance, art and craft ideas, etc that relate to the theme of toys, helping others and design would be most welcome. Regards Jenny
