Using other settings/parents obs?
by Guest- 15 replies

Hi Just wanted opinions to do with the observations that parents tell you and what other settings tell you. I share a few of my children with a number of other settings and we do share obs/development ages and stages etc. However, I am finding that my observations of a childs development are different from those of other settings eg a 48 month old I may think 30 - 50 mnths developing and they think 40-60mnth (sometimes no other info..so not sure if beg/dev/secure). This is then very difficult when it comes to talking to parents as they are getting different info about their child. (We are normally the bad guys). I am moderated by the EYFS teacher at school and she …

Hi there, I have been advised that I need to observe my staff in practice (for supervision). We are only a really small setting and I find it really hard but I have been told that it could be the reason for not attaining outstanding. Does anyone have a template that they could share, along the lines of what I should be looking for whilst I observe? I would be really grateful for any advice or help. Thank you in advance Lucy

Hello! Many years ago we were advised to not use these kind of statements to track children's progress. And then the EYFS Development Matters writes (one of my favourite statements) 'Children develop at their own rates, and in their own ways. The development statements and their order should not be taken as necessary steps for individual children. 6 They should not be used as checklists. The age/stage bands overlap because these are not fixed age boundaries but suggest a typical range of development' I use the Earlys Years Outcomes (which also states.....guide to making best-fit judgements about whether a child is showing typical development for their age)…

We have always used homemade dough - some successfully and others that crumble and provide little 'playability'! I would like to try clay for a change. Anyone got a 'best buy' ? Thank you

Does anyone have any report formats they would be willing to share? This is my first year in pre-school, coming from F2. Last year 31 reports was enough, this year will be 56 so I need to come up with a slimmer version otherwise I'd better start writing them now!

Hi all Can all of you seasoned Tapestry users tell me honestly if your staff complete "in the minute obs" or generally take pics and upload later? Also if you use the tapestry app, can you add emerging, developing etc at the time of inputting the obs or do you have to be logged in on line to do this? Can the children be set to display in say alphabetical order or do you have to filter by for eg key person each time? Do you let tapestry decide your next steps or do you encourage staff to use their own judgement? I'm sure I'll think of loads more questions as I "play" but these will do initially!! Have looked in the frequently asked questions but a b…
