Here's the link; http://nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.g...cc8b1edf719.pdf I just wonder how many of you have a journal that functions like this - ours do seem to be more like a scrap book, with parents sections, I'm considering changing the format for September, any helpful thoughts?

Hi My manager has requested that we look into how we can moderate observations to ensure we are all coming to the same conclusions and to ensure children are or have achieved an aspect before it gets highlighted off as achieved. Does anyone else do this and if so how? One more question do you tell staff or have a baseline of how many times a skill needs to be observed before it is highlight as achieved.? It has been noticed that staff highlight if they have offered it or seen it once which doesn't mean it is achieved. Hope that makes some sense? Skippy

Pre-school Reading?

Hi, We are a preschool with 26 children, 18 of whom will go to school in Sept. Two of the 4 staff are Early Years teachers who have a lot of experience of teaching reading. Of the 18 children about 12 know their sounds and are ready to start blending. Lots of the parents are saying 'She's really interested in reading, she's starting to do it at home with me'. We really feel like we need to be doing something a bit more structured for these children, maybe buying some simple phonetic reading books and sending them home or having some small focussed group times for these children on reading. But, I feel that this is frowned upon under the EYFS. We are doing …

Its again! Its that Sunday evening feeling again and thinking about planning Can I ask have we got the complete wrong end of the stick about continious provisison- Our workshop areas are set up and resourced with equipment and toys so the children can freely access , and make a huge mess!! Ive spoken to someone today who said they just put one thing out in each of their areas for the week and then change the item if the children request something else? That would make sense that they have no mess! We spend so much time tidying up we dont seem to get anything done, let alone thinking about planning for any learning, small group time etc! Can oth…

Messy Play

Hi all, we are planning to do a messy play workshop after easter as we still have parents sending children to nursery in white clothes and expecting them to return home clean!! Does anyone know of a good article anywhere aimed at parents which informs them why messy play and exploration is so important for young children. The other complaint is that playing in the water gives them a cold, so don't let them play in the water- any article on this??! Thanks for any ideas/suggestions

Hi All, Been on a training course today for EYFS document and dispite working in EY's for a decade, and having done many years of planning, need to find a simpler form to enable reluctant key workers to complete their own next steps/planning for their children. Unfortunately there is resistance in this area due to the concept of paperwork overload - so need something quick and simple to win them all over. Any help in this area would be absolutely brilliant. Thanks Deb64

Easter/mother's Cards?

Hi, How do you feel this kind of activity fits in with the EYFS? One of my staff is fixated on doing these kind of makes and whenever we begin planning for the next term always suggests a list of such things. I find it so hard saying no to ALL of her ideas.... These would certainly never be child-initiated activities, although sometimes children do choose to make a card for someone. I have really cut down on our focused activities and only plan one a week which we offer each day (only open in mornings) If it was up to this member of staff then this term's 6 focus activities would be make a mother's day card, make an easter card, make chocolate nests and decorate …
