We are being observed tomorrow by someone connected to speech and language (not quite sure who, but my boss has asked for a good circle activity). We have decided to go with Night and Day, so I was thinking of introducing the story of 'Whatever Next' using a cardboard box and a bear as the focus and encouraging the children to speak about the use of the box. Our children have a very short sitting down span, so it would need to be quick but interesting if you see what I mean? How does this sound? Any ideas? I'm really struggling with this one and have only got until tomorrow to plan something fantastic! Thanks

Hi everyone I hope we have all enjoyed Halloween with the kiddies or friends and family. I am looking to change my Preschool routine as I seem to be in a rut and it aint working for the children and staff sometimes cannot be bothered to do certain things. In my current routine i have breakfast/free play, circle time, free play with rolling snack, key person group time (which never happens with some staff!!!), outdoor play, story time, lunch, outdoor play, free play/ adult initiated activities, story time, tea and outdoor play. I just feel it doesnt work whether its the structure of it or there is too much. I would love any ideas or examples that I could l…

Hi I have 1 Polish child in my class, i am finding it difficult to get him involved in everyday lessons. Because of other children that need extra support in the class there are not enough adults to work with him 1 to 1. He seems to just copy what others are doing in some cases and in others he justs sits there. I have learned a few polish words which helps me communicate with him a bit and he is beginning to understand the routine. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas that may help get him more involved without making him feel left out. Also are there any good websites that do polish-English resources that i could make to help him with his Polish - English. …

Hi all! This is my first post, so hope its ok. My head has asked me to plan for CIL, but im not sure how to do it. She has asked me not to use a planning board, but to just try different ways. I am an NQT this year and really can't think of any different ways. I have year one children in my class as well who need support when working. I do have a full time TA, but one of us has to work with the Y1 children! Help! My head keeps asking and I have no answers! Any advice would be great! Thanks x

Does anyone have a sample focus plan that they wouldn't mind sharing? Also I'm a little confused as to how we are expected to meet the learning intentions for every child in order to meet their developmental needs etc e.g. I run a setting that offers care to children from 2 to 5 yrs but relatively speaking until they leave to go up to school. Anyway the ponit that I'm making is let's say the developmental matter/learning intentions is 'Begin to make comparisons between quantities'. This may not suit older children etc.

Realting to my recent posting on planning I just wondered how many written plans a week people have. I run a pre-school during the mornings only and was suggested by my advisory teacher that I have a written focus plan for each day: totalling 5. I was just wondering if everyone is writng their plans down especially those who are completing their weekly planning retrospectively and on the spot. Is everyone writing down their plans and of so how many. I have 5 staff so it makes sense for each of us to complete 1 focus plan however I am reluctant to ask my staff to do this in their own time. One way around this could be for the staff to take it in turns to have some time out…

How Oftern Do You Observe Each Child?
by Guest colechin- 17 replies

Please could you advise me. When a new child starts at the setting we arrange for a tracking document to be raised. This is usually after they have been in the setting for 2/3 weeks. A member of staff will observe the child for the whole session, writing down areas visited, what was said, done, if other children present and so on, with a summary at the end, which we sit down with the parents and show during their child's first half term parent meeting. Firstly I would like to ask should a tracker to see if they are visiting all areas of the setting be done for the whole session or just for part? Also what other detailed observation should be done and for how long.…
