hi me again, god this site is great. What is everyone using for their learning journeys? I'm currently using those snopake binders: i think that's what they're called). However, the staff and children are findig them very restriciting e.g. the children cannot easily turn the pages of their work without the clamp pinging at them and staff are limited as to how much work can actually fit in. I like the idea of scrap books however cannot find any with sufficient pages. I'm reluctant to buy one with 20 pages or so and end up with each child having 6 to their name.

Does anyone have any advice. I'm the owner and manager of a playgroup and am finding that most of my weekends are being taken up with planning for the following week. If I'm not completing focus plans: 1 per day as suggested by my advisory teacher, I'm trailing around the shops looking for resources. It's a complete nightmare and as lucky as I do feel to have my own setting I feel it is important to have a work/life balance if not for my own sainity then my families. If I can remember rightly my advisory teacher told me that staff too can be expected to participate in planning. My worry however with this is asking the staff to do it in their own time. I mean childcare is…

...I have found this site immensely helpful and am now pretty sure that most people are heading the way of child led learning. I have a very hard time trying to get my staff to relax a bit with children doing as they please with the various areas. I do understand their concerns which are the lack of discipline if children are allowed to just do as they wish with the toys etc and also being a small setting we are already quite cramped trying to fit in all areas and when you let children freeplay the mess is pretty horrendous and it becomes like shovelling snow while it is still snowing. Also, How do you keep things like sand in a decent state if a child decides to tip pots…

Hi there everyone, I just wanted a bit of advice. I have worked in nurseries for years but for the last 2 years I have been working as a nanny and now feel very out of practice. I am studying the E115 through open university and need to gather lots of evidence of different things. I have heard a lot of people referring to learning journies and wondered if anyone could give me any more information about them, do you follow a standard document or make your own, what excatly are they, do you think this would be a benefical thing for me to do as a nanny? Thanks in advance for your help Rapunzel x

Hi, does anyone know of any reports or studies online which talk about the effects on children due to attending multiple settings? I'm looking for any examples of children's behaviour and signs to look out for. x

at our staff meeting which is planned for the inset day after half term, I want to cover the above (next steps etc) In the half term I have been with the preschool we have moved to weekly planning and more child led planning, but the staff lack confidence in themselves in planning from the next steps, and actually all Learning journeys are reams of observations with no documenting of next steps or any assessment. I have shown them how I do my next steps and how they feed into the planning, but would like to put together some more concise and clear to deliver to them at this meeting. Anyone got anything they have already put together that could help me plan this training…

Hi Was wondering if any of you use Write Dance in the Nursery - a progressive music and movement programme for the development of pre-writing and writing skills in children? What do you think of it?

Focused Observations

Hi, I am trying to make a plan for each key person doing focused long observations across the year on their children. I was going to plan 6 obs. a year for each child, one in each of the 6 areas so 6 per child in total but..... I did some long. obs. last week which were fascinating and really illuminating but I would be hard pressed to pin them down into any area of the curriculum. One girl was crawling around for 20 mins following another child (she is 4), loads of great info. but it could only count as PSED I think. I wondering if it might be better to just do six general long. obs.a year for each child and then look for emerging patterns etc. ? Though…
