Learning Letters

We have the feeling that we're a bit weak in the area of introducing letters and sounds to the older children who are about to go off into reception. Could I ask what other settings do on this - what kind of approaches and activities do you use? My leader is I think a bit unsure about this area and would appreciate lots of ideas. I'm going down there this morning to suggest we do some mark making with chalks in our newly free flowing outside area, and perhaps draw S shaped roads for the ride on toys to go along. Is this the sort of thing others do and what else could we try?

If anyone is interested the 3rd National Conference is on June 20th 2009, focusing on 'Learning Stories - a respectful approach to assessment'. The Keynote speaker is Wendy Lee from New Zealand, with seminars on the afternoon with the Wingate Team. All details including flyer and contact details will be on the website (www.wingatechildrenscentre.com). I went last year and had a fascinating day (worth going just to see Paddy's set up and lunch was wonderful ) I'm going again this year and dragging along one of the nursery nurses this time...

Hi, my name is Laura, I am new to this site and am looking for some help to find some planning forms for the EYFS. I work with a mixed age of 1-5 years and am going to be doing individual planning. We havent started it where I am at the minute as it is very new and is still open as a creche, but we are planning on opening it as daycare very soon. Any advice or formats that you use would be greatly apprectiated. Thank you Laura

Hi, I work in a school Nursery with 25 children - myself and a TA. Just wondering whether others who work in school nurseries plan activities that are offered to all the class or do you plan activities for just for individuals/small groups? Does anyone know what the views of the big O are on this? Thanks Green Hippo xx

we have just had a visit form our eyst who although happy with the way we operate our free flow system wanted to see our planning for what children were learning from their outdoor play - we said that mostly it was the same as indoors but she was not happy with that - said we need to develop planning for what the children are learning from their out door play - what do you think and does anyone do this?

Transfer Information

I'm really struggling to get started on these this year. I feel exhausted every night and just want to go to bed. Anyway, I have one bit I'm thinking about under PSRN for a child due to transfer for preschool, he uses lots of numbers in his play but can't yet count in sequence, he can name shapes and recognises groups of objects - eg. he drew 4 wheels on his car, can always see 2 without counting. I've done so much counting over the last few months in the hope that he would pick it up, if I try to do a 1:1 counting activity he says "I don't want to, you count". Just wondering how I can write that up positively as I do think he's quite capable - just not a confident count…
