I know it's 6.30pm on Saturday night and maybe I should be doing other things but I've been thinking about this all day.... For all of you out there who have abandoned themes and topics as a starting point for your planning, do you still monitor, through paperwork, your overall, long term coverage and promotion of all aspects of each area of learning in what you provide for the children in your setting? In other words, do you have some "long term" system of ensuring that the activities, experiences and resources that you provide in your indoor/oudoor environment enable the children to work towards the full range of goals across all six areas? And if so, how do y…

Keyworker assessment sheets, help needed PLEASE! Hi I'm fairly new to the forum have been reading lots and adding odd reply. This is the first time I have started a question so sorry if I haven't done it right. I work in a pre-school (sessional) with children 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 year approx. and we are really getting confused as to what system we should be using to assess individual children i.e. keyworker sheets/folders. My manager has just introduced an EYFS Profile which now I look at it, I think it is more for Reception/Year One children. I am now completely confused. Help please!!!! Any advice would be greatly received.

HI im just wondering if anyone can offer me some advice , for some time now we have been completing learning journeys for each child with some lovely observations links to dev matters etc, im just wondering we currently on a half termly basis send out a learning journey review for parents including the childrens likes intersets strengths and planned next step, the only problem im concerned about is that i feel they are quite general in fact we only really put one or two next steps down and dont always have one for each area. Im just interested to what other settings use and if they plan a next step for each child under each area each half term. We do currently plan for i…

Child Led / Adult Initiated

Hi Was wondering if anyone could help me. Am writing an assignment at the moment and part of it involves the new EYFS. I know we are supposed to implement a balance of child initiated and adult led activities but am struggling to fing the actual written reference to this in the EYFS documentation. Like so many things in childcare "someone said we have to do this" but actually pinning down who said it / where this originated from can be challenging. If anyone can enlighten me I would be very grateful. Sally

Hi I am considering giving all our children at preschool a blank book to use as a home-school communication diary type thing. Parents are saying they don't know enough about what their child is learning and how they are progressing - we are finding it difficult to pass on info verbally as end of sessions / changeovers are pretty hectic ...(but thats another thing to sort out) but we do send out termly progress reports and have displays of photos and planning and info on eyfs on show but obviously that is not enough. We have almost 25 children on the books and three staff - so around 8 key children each...and not alot of time to be writing in them when sessio…

Hi all I was just wondering how everyone gets all the staff involved in the planning? I run a very busy nursery and it is not always possible for all staff to get together. How do you manage? I was thinking about doing staff planning meetings once a month and get all staff to write their planning ideas up each week? look forwards to see how you do it. Cheers

Hi all, sorry if this is a little long, but hopefully one everyone will find useful. I am putting together a list of words and means for staff to use in observations, i know we will never get them all, but staff are really finding this hard, as the old manager did everything for them, so in one way lucky them, but im not going to do that for them, i have far to much other stuff to do!!!!! They are very good and do want to learn, so i want to help them as much as possible. I have taken a few examples from the obs i found on this site already to. I am also trying to keep it as simple as i can, as they have a lot to learn and dont want to overload them, but it is …
