Hi could anyone clear up my confusion. Is themes and celebrations out. I was lead to believe that planning should be around the individual childrens interest and observations. However I believe some early years settings are still doing celebrations i. e. diwali, easter, christmas. Is this ok to do or not. Thanks Kiverpool18

Help Needed To Progress This Child!

Hello All! I have just been speaking to a KW in our setting about a specific child. The said child is continually matching objects/lining up objects throughout the day here whether it be during play or even at snack! Just this morning she has lined up all the pairs of shoes in the baseroom, laid flat in lines pieces of tissue paper, put matching animals in a big circle, lined up her apple pieces in a long line before eating, and the list goes on! I am struggling to suggest ways in which these characteristics can be developed to suit the child. I don't think it is anything to worry about, I have suggested for KW to mention to mum to see if the same occurs at home, …

Yesterday I went to training on obs, assessment and planning in the EYFS and the keynote speaker was Nancy Stewart- the regional advisor for the west midlands. She is a link from government to the LEA. These are the main points; *Observations should be purposeful. If there's no purpose in them don't waste time doing them. *Observations should be manageable- you don't have to do "shed loads" (her own words) *You must not do tick lists. Knowing what colours the children know and whether they can count to 10 is not what it's all about. *There is no requirement to mark off the "development matters" and/or "look, listen and note" section of the guidance book.- The guidan…

Weekly Planning

Hi there, I know that there are loads of posts on here for planning and this may have been covered before but I cannot find the answer I'm looking for. We have recently had an 'Early Years mentor' visit our setting and she seems happy with our environment and wants to visit us again to discuss planning but not until 5th November and we are hoping to have something in place before then. I have compiled a yearly plan showing a new topic/theme each month and linking it to each of the development areas to ensure that they are all covered at various points of the year. I hope this is how it should be done! However, there is still confusion over the weekly planning. So…

Hi everyone, My head's been spinning this weekend with our Nursery planning etc since I went on that planning course on Thursday. I have a few questions which I'm sure someone can help me with (not sure whether I should include them in the same thread?). I apologise if I've asked these questions before but I'm still unsure if I'm doing things completely 'right'! 1. Currently, I am planning in the medium term, choosing learning intentions which relate to the whole class (the next steps for the class in general) and include any gaps from last half-term I have no pre-set coverage of aspects. Right or wrong? 2. I then plan weekly - I tend to plan 1 focus per day but …

Letters And Sounds

As you know I have only just started my job and today I had a meeting with a childs KW from her other setting, she mentioned that we shouldn't be using jolly phonics anymore and now letters and sounds. I have heard a bit about letters and sounds (not much though!) and had planned to speak to our development officer when she gets round to seeing us! But can anyone tell me more? and any good resources you have used etc? Thanks

Hi, I've been on a planning course today which has helped in some respects and confused me in others! With regards to medium term planning the main point that they were getting across was that they should be focussed on LEARNING NOT TEACHING, in other words, they should be mainly about the LEARNING INTENTIONS and not the activities. They did say that it is ok to have topics as long as you're taking into account the interests and needs of the children - explaining that the topic is the context for the learning. The other point they made about medium term planning was that it should in some way address the balance of the curriculum - suggesting having a focus for each …

Planning Again

Can anyone help me, we plan on a fortnightly basis we use the observations of our children to plan for their next steps i can see from the learning journeys and i can see it in the children that they are achieving and that nursery is a positive learning environment. However our other nursery has an eyp who has now made me doubt what we do, she says the long term planning is too general, that we should be placing more of an emphasis on medium term planning and that there needs to be more focussed observations. Should we change our planning is it not enough, and where do you strike a balance between sitting paperwork and actually doing what we first came into this job for…
