Planning Using The New Eyfs
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi I am starting a new post in Sept as a FS1 and 2 teacher. I have not received any training about the EYFS. I have spent time looking thorugh it, looking at the CD and watching videos on Teachers TV. The main query I have is how will it affect your planning? I am used to planning a half termly topic. I understand that I will have to plan in shorter 2-3 week mini topics that will be lead by the children's interests. Just wanted to hear some ideas, many thanks

We had a big dicussion today about possibly changing our nursery room layouts so that they were not under the six areas of learning but organised in a different way. We want to look at the resources so that they provide an environment that promotes sustained thinking and provokes children's learning. I know some places that have studio/workshop/discovery learning bays etc. How do you organise your nursery class/school settings? what areas have you got? We are looking for some good ideas that people have tried and they know has worked for them.

Are Topics Still Ok To Use?

I know this has probably been covered umpteen times, but can teachers use a topic approach in nursery classes? I realise that the children are supposed to lead the planning, but is it a good idea to have a vague topic as a fall back plan if things don't go right, or just as something to base provision on? I dont know if it's the student in my clinging on to what ive been taught at Uni - what do you do? xx

Hi, I am back- been REALLY ILL, feel I have missed out on loads... very big sigh! I have bronchitis and tonsillitis and to top it all, I have an infection in my stomach that won't go away! So lying in bed at home trying not to think about all that I am missing. Then I though of all of you on the forum and thought you could cheer me up. I want to do a learning journey next term about time travel, but being only 4/5 this is a very difficult concept - so I thought i would start with ourselves, then us as babies, then parents, grandparents and then pretend to travel back in time further with our teddy bears and see the dinosaurs... some lovely books suitable for this age gro…

Nursery On Entry Assessment

Hi, am hoping someone might be able to help me. I was on a EYSFS course today where it was mentioned that there has been a national pilot scheme where pen pictures are used to make judgements on which stage a child is on at a particular time in each area of learning. The sugestion seems to be to do one on entry and then 5 others throughout the year. My LEA seems keen to use this so would love to hear from anyone involved in the pilot or doing something similar. All comments positive and negative would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, sarah

Hi Can i just ask what sort off observation you would get if you had a stepping stone 'beginning to gain an understanding of significant parts of a story, e.g beginning, middle, end' how would you know this?

Continuous Provision

Currently we have been using a form from the EYFS CD that has the adult led activity on the top and then a list of activities that we do with sand, water, role play, etc etc. How does everybody else show their planning? I am looking into changing it to show how we are meeting the six areas of learning to accompany our learning wall. Within this I would put "PRSN - sand play filling containers" for example. Or do I need to show how each activity will be used during that day. I am used to linking what ever activity we are doing to the areas so find the other way quite foreign. I want it easy to fill in rather than as time consuming as it is now.

Can someone please clarify are these the same as a Record of Achievement file. I have been told that these are what some settings are doing who already have done and managed outstanding ROA files and that these are a step up.
