Hello - I have had an observation today, and it went really well so thanks to all of you for your ideas and suggestions for activities. Following on from the obs my HT suggested putting my Nursery children into ability groups for focussed activities in Numeracy and Language. I just wondered what everyone thought? It goes against everything I have been told about Nursery in the past... so a bit stumped now. I plan focussed activities that all children access and from observations during the activity I extend their learning there and then or the next day etc. I haven't thought about differentiating focus activities for say four different groups before - feels too much like …

Hello there, I would like to assess the 3-4 year olds in my nursery class on their recognition of numbers 1-6/1-12. I need a fun activity that will allow me to see quite quickly who can recognise them and who needs help. I want to separate the children into groups of different abilties to make the assessment easier. Any ideas?? hannah x

We have several bright children who are not often motivated by our current provision. This includes a just three year old who can read almost anything and knows their numbers. How would you enhance provision for these children to make it more open ended and encourage them to build on their knowledge.

Does anyone out there have a list of activities for child initiated learning? My school is very low on resources but we have been given money to buy some bits and just wondered what other people used. Thanks Rachel

Dear all, I am currently revamping the way in which we plan for our nursery setting which is part of a Preparatory school. I am looking for examples of how other schools format their long, medium and short term plans. I also need to know when and how you write out your activity plans. Also, I need help with how to structure the day and plans with the arrival of 'rising three year olds' who will join after Easter. At present there are 13 girls who are in the nursery. The new arrivals will be out of year group and will remain in the nursery next year. I need help with how they will integrate inot the nursery e.g. when we will all work together etc I have already loo…

From my observations in a playschool session we have a child who we observed and want to take forward from the observation we have made but are not sure where to go with it. Any ideas would be gratefully received. The observation was of the child threading, they spent a long time meticuously threading the beads onto a peice of thread. They then stood up and turned around on the spot watching the movement of the thread in the air, this went on for about 5minutes. They then put these down and went to the climbing frame where they used their hands to to hold on and suspend themselves in order to swing their body. It appears that the child was interested in the moment…
