Hello - Can I ask some advice (urgently needed). What sort of assessment sheets are people using? Are tick lists better than a traffic light system? If so, why? May sound silly but I have an assignment on this due in on Monday - HELP!!! :lol Many thanks

Hi, I'm new & desperate!! Have worked as a Deputy Supervisor in a pre-school for a year, & am getting nowhere fast! Currently 'we' plan for one step a week, & plan an activity for the children to achieve that step. Each keyworker has an allocated hour a week to record their key children achieve that step, in the form of a post-it in their individual file. If we happen to 'notice'(not allowed to observe!) our children achieve any other steps at any other time, we have to ignore it-as "It's not planned for! or "It's not your time"! I've argued this till I'm blue in the face, but keep being told the staff want it simple,& we dont have time, but I'm convinc…

Schemas - Can Someone Help, Please?

Hello everyone, As part of my foundation degree course in early years, I need to have some follow-through of my study topics, and make plans for my own development. One aspect that particularly interests me is the use of schemas in a pre-school setting. Ideally, I would like to visit a setting that uses schemas with children aged 2 to 4 years. Also, I would like some information on how schemas can be used practically within the English foundation stage curriculum. Can any of you help me with this? If you are using schemas, are you within easy access of the N.Herts/S.Cambs area? And, if you are, could I visit to see you in action? If you are not within…

Today, my play leader gave me a piece of paper headed: Spring Term 04 Medium Term Plans. It was left next to my handbag, no explanation, no anything. It reads: PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT Relate and make attachments to members of the group, demonstrate a sense of pride in own achievements. Extension younger children - Have a sense of belonging. Extension 4 year olds - Show care and concern for others, for other living things and for the environment. MATHEMATICS Willingly attempt to count, with some numbers in the correct order. Use shapes appropriately for tasks. Use size language such as big and little. Show simailarities of sha…

hi, its the first time ive used this forum so apologies in advance if this doesnt seem to make much sense Im sure you'll get the drift. can someone please help us we are getting very confused we run a pre-school and just cant get our head around this planning! EYCP has said that every activity we have out needs to relate to the ELG, fair enough, they are saying we could write a piece for example on the sand tray,- and what the children are learning from this experience, and laminate it and put in with the activity every time we use it and so on for lego etc, basically everything. Thiis is so that when a different member of staff moves onto that activity during the morning…

Weekly Letter Session
by Guest- 5 replies

At pre-school we have a weekly session with the older children to look at the letters of the alphabet. We have always worked from a through to z. I have noticed recently when I have been dropping off at a local authority nursery that they have a letter each week but not working through the alphabet from beginning to end. So I think they started with c and then I didn't notice for a while and then they did t and this week it is d. Is this a random choice by them or do they have a particular order for a particular purpose? Is it part of a scheme or something? Linda

Assessment

Hi, Ofsted is currently inspecting my school, and today after my little 'chat' with one of the inspectors she wanted to know why we don't have any formal assessment on entry to nursery. Being new to nursery I don't really know if this is normal practice or not. She wanted to see cumulative evidence - similar to that of the old baseline. Is there a widely used format that shows figures, points etc? Or not? Any feedback or advice would be VERY welcome.

Observation And Recording

I currently work with a plain note book and write what I see "...childs name is working with water and cylinders she has put in one cylinder a plastic fish, puts her hand in, unable to reach she proceeds to pour water in and her facial expression changes as the fish rises.." I then transfer this to an observation sheet which is divided into the 6 areas of learning ( 3 columes on one side and on reverse the other 6.) It is dated i.e. August 2003 then I write exactly what I saw, no judgements. This would be placed under the Knowledge and Understanding colume. The next step would be to continue with this concept and add to the water ares floating and sinking objects "e…
