Hi there everyone. Would just like to say I was really pleased to find this site as there isn't yet enough support for Foundation Stage practitioners (that I've been able to find anyway!) I'm an NQT trained in Early Years about to start a post in Jan. I will be working in an Early Years unit of Nursery and Reception children, I will be mainly responsible for one of the Reception classes of 28 children. However, the unit works openly except for 2 short literacy and numeracy sessions so the teachers rotate each week between 2 different inside rooms and the outside area. HELP! - This is where I'm hoping for some advice - The Head of the unit has asked that when we star…

Hi, I've been asked to amend our assessment documentation for 4 year olds so that it is in line with the desirable learning outomes for this age group. This really isn't my area, however, in my ignorance I thought that we already had it covered, but apparently not. Has anyone got an example of and existing assesment document or some pointers to where I can get some futher information. Thanks in anticipation Julian

I am currently in year 1 of studying for my foundation degree in early years. I have decided to write my next essay on observations and how they can be more beneficial to planning activities. This is especially topical as I have just had my Ofsted inspection (managed a GOOD!!!!) and I said I would like obs to be a target to work on (why did I say that!!!) I would welcome any comments or suggestions of working practices that people are using.

'p' Levels For Target Setting
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi, I've read a similar topic in the dedicated Reception and Year One discussions. At my school the Reception class teacher uses 'P' levels to assess all the children, I am being pressurised by SMT to think about using them in Nursery BUT I don't think they are suitable for Nursery. At the moment I do lots of planned assessments on the children but find it difficult to work out how to level them in a way that others will understand. Do I need to level the children in Nursery? I am sure that after half term when I need to decide on my PM targets I will be pressurised into having a target for the children to reach by the end of Nursery. Another quick …

Long Term Planning
by Guest- 12 replies

I am a little concerned about how much should go into long term planning. Mine has always been quite basic-the topics we are going to follow over the year and a brief description of each topic. Having looked at some examples recently they seem very detailed to me listing activities that will take place for each area of learning. I have always put that into my medium term planning-that is a topic web. As I have my OFSTED inspection soon I don't want to make drastic changes just for the sake of it. What does anyone think? Thanks Linda

I m currently working abroad, and have been for the past year, I work in an International school in Nursery, ages 3-4, most with English as a second language. I am interested to hear from other internation teachers or those who teach in areas where there is a high percent of second language learners to find out if my planning format is taking enough account of esl children. Look forward to hearing your replies
