I now have 2 children that also attend a child minder for most of the week.. With their parents permission I gave them a report in all the areas. I asked her if we could exchange information. The child minder was not happy to exchange but now she has given me one observation in 1 area for each child. They are both focussed on the negative. Am I expecting too much?

Writing 'Next Steps'
by Guest- 24 replies

Hi everyone, I am just after a bit if feedback on how settings write their Next steps for their children. We do them 3 times a year which we are happy with but it is an onerous task and it feels like we are setting targets for the sake of it! At the moment we set next steps for the under 2s in the Prime areas only but for the toddlers and pre-school children we do both Prime and Specific areas. I am thinking to possibly cut it down to Prime areas only or alternate between Prime and Specific. Just wondering what everyone else does? Thanks in advance

Ideas needed for 'spacial awareness'

Anyone have any good ideas to help a child with spacial awareness? He is constantly 'hurting' other children - usually accidently and is constantly 'on the go' - a real 'live wire', but has no understanding of personal space.

Long Term Plan Nursery
by Guest- 14 replies

Please can you tell me what you include in your Long Term Plans for your Nursery setting. We will be following the Dimensions Curriculum on a two year cycle, so I will (a year at a time) detail the theme titles ie Home Sweet Home, but just wondered whether anyone includes anything else?! or whether there is anything else I MUST include on a LTP. Thanks

Next steps have become the bane of my life! Several of my team really struggle with them and we've tried lots of different ways of recording them and feeding them into the planning. I've even put together a folder broken down into areas of learning with every next step I could think of in that area, but still we struggle. It always seems to be next steps that are causing issues! I'm pretty sure I saw a post on here from someone who doesn't use them and I wondered what the alternative is? If you don't record children's next steps, what do you plan from and how do you record their progress. I'd be really interested in hearing from anyone who doesn't use next steps. …

Looking for a PLOD!

Anyone have any thoughts about a child 'spinning' herself around a pole?! Frequent behaviour - not sure about how to extend, if at all. x

We have some really good new staff this year and everything seems to be feeling much more successful and cheerful (I'm well aware that could easily change though!) One of the last things that I am not sure about it sharing Next Steps with parents. We used to set them for a half term and put them on Tapestry for parents but then moved to being much more fluid about them so they change all the time. This seems to feel much better and more relevant to each child. However, it would be a huge job to keep telling parents of the changes. So does anyone have a lovely, easy, paperwork light way to do it?
