Can I ask can anyone tell me any sites or books to help me get my head around the EYFS and tracking/assessments? Head is all over the place and really just need to clarify for my owN sanity that my understanding of it is correct or if not to clarify a few things for myself. Having a tough few days and so trying to find a positive approach to move forward with it.

next steps - how are you doing them?

do you plan an activity to meet a child's next step in an area of learning, or simply date when you have seen evidence of it? i have 14 children in my key group and so doing in say 4 activities to meet next steps (several have the same one) in PD this week, as well as doing follow up activity from last week for children who need extra input and ones who need extending, and also an adult -led activity means i am running out of time to interact with children in CI. feeling like i'm torn in too many directions! any advice welcome please x

How much progress would you expect a child to make in a term? Just having a disagreement with my co manager over a child. She put him at secure in July at 40-60 to numbers and I kept him there in December as don't feel I can confidently say he can do it all. She's arguing that no progress has been made and that 0.8 is not good enough for a term and that they should all be making a min of 1. This child is very gifted in numbers and is nearly 4.

Does anybody else do this ? Shared by our inspector and staff member saw this at a training day. Using full body photos of each child on a lolly stick they can use these to incorporate themselves into their small world play , guess what we will be doing this week.

Hi all, We have a staff meeting coming up where we plan to moderate some of our assessments as a team. We have an ongoing issue of children being assessed too high e.g moving from our toddler room to the Pre-school room secure at 30-50 months, leaving us to go to school secure at 40-60m etc. I know that this is an issue across a lot of pre-schools and historically I remember when I was teaching in a Reception class, children would come to me having already reached their ELGs! In reality this was not the case at all and the evidence wasn't coming from a majority of CI observations. I have recently been talking to the Reception teacher at one of our feeder schools a…

Have got a complete mind blank on this one  but where would you put a child who could understand the whole taking turns, spinning spinners, rolling dice etc but not understand that when somebody else gets to the middle that they have not won and won't win.

Paperwork

I have another burning issue I need help with. :-) We have a happy setting with thriving, confident children and staff who get on very well. However, however much we try and lessen paperwork and change the format, with input from all staff, staff do not seem to be happy with both the amount of paperwork we have (next steps and tracking every half term and a termly report) and they way we write them. As we have lessened the paperwork to such an extent that we cannot afford to reduce it more and our learning journeys (still paper format as tapestry is not an option) are very child orientated, myself, alongside the director of the Pre-school are at a loss to why the paperw…
