Is anyone switching from development matters to Eay Years Outcomes to assess children? Like right now? Just with new starters I'm tempted to get on with it?

Hi there, new child started and they are here until their visas come through and then return to USA...do I need to start a progress chart and folder or just plan for them and observe? Thank you, Spiral :-)

Hi I just wondered if anyone still uses SEAL or maybe have something else they'd like to share to support children's social and emotional development? ?

Does anyone have a recipe for playdough which does not use salt? Some of the children are unable to use the playdough during our 'dough disco' sessions because the salt causes their hands to sting if they have a small cut. x

Hi, I have a child in my Nursery class who is also looked after by a Childminder. One of the observations that she has shared with me about this child includes a comment about the child being keen to write by writing over the dots. In our setting we prefer to either provide a model for the children to copy or use a light coloured pen for the children to write over the top of if they need this. What would you do? I don't want to tell her how to do her job... Thanks Green Hippo x

What's on your mark-making table?

I am planning to develop the mark-making area at nursery. Until now it has been an 'inadequate' area of my nursery provision ; not through want of trying, but because without constant supervision (despite laying down 'rules' which the children helped to devise) it is always 'trashed' . It is not the most inspiring area but I have just bought some wooden pigeon holes which will sit at the back of the table and 2 wooden floor standing DVD storage racks which will stand either side of the table - all of which will be used to store mark-making implements, paper, envelopes etc. :1b I mean to start off well by labelling all the compartments which will help when tidying up …

Developing a natural outdoor learning environment?

I am a qualified teacher and employed in a maintained nursery - as a qualified teacher the ratios are 1:13 but I am luckier than some as there are 26 pupils (in each session) and two (non-qualified) adults as well as myself. I have recently been given the exciting task of improving our outdoor area - we have already resurfaced the playground but now comes the challenge of dealing with two largish grass areas. I am extremely lucky to have a healthy budget to play with but am conflicted about what to do with it - it would be very easy to have built a large 'play area' with soft surfacing built - I have no doubt that the children would love it and it would be safe and provid…

Hi all want to make up some talking boxes to help inspire some reluctant talkers and some that just need more practice. The trouble is I have been thinking all half term about what to put in the first one and every idea I have either seems too prescriptive or just boring! I wanted something that children could use their imagination with so it could be many things to many different children. What would you put in yours????? Current themes seem to be superheroes, monsters/dinosaurs, small world collections

Hi all How do you plan for outdoor play? Do you have the same things out all the time or do you have different things every day/week? At the minute we have a lot of things that are out every day and then we add things depending on interests, next steps and weather! Is this right? Do you record your planning for outdoor play? Sorry for all the questions!
