Ideas to develop good eye contact
by Guest- 7 replies

I am looking for ideas to develop a child's eye contact. The child is 50m and has communication and language difficulties (he has glue ear). I am awaiting support from the school SENCo and would like to help this child in the interim. I am planning to make a chart of children's eye colour but would like other ideas - any suggestions would be gratefully received! x

PE in nursery

Hi. I'm an NQT in a school nursery who has been asked to start running specific PE sessions for the nursery children - in the school hall, changing into a PE kit etc. I'm a bit stuck as to what to do really. I have looked at lesson formats for reception but I think these are a bit too much for our children. I was thinking of starting with parachute games and ring games and see how they get on with these. The children of course have CI access to our outside area with bikes, balls etc. but these PE sessions are to be in addition to this provision. Would anyone be willing to share what they have found worked well for them ? Many thanks.

I started working in a pre school where planning was non existent. I have all staff now bringing in an adult led activity each week based on their key children's next steps and a messy play so every day is covered but I am wondering how to set up my planning for the 7 areas of learning. I was thinking of having a sheet where staff put in their ideas for the following week to support their own key children s development and next steps and then I as manager compile it into a working plan for each day of the week? What does everybody else do?

Autistic child starting nursery

Hi I hope someone can help. I have a little boy starting in Nursery next week, they have recently moved to the area and the parents told me at the initial visit that they think he is Autistic. We have had him observed by a person in the know and they have confirmed that this little boy is definitely autistic, we just need to get all the paperwork in place for a formal diagnosis. (He has no awareness of others, no eye contact, flapping a large proportion of the time, no sense of danger, sensitive to loud noises etc oh and to make things a little more complex he is also EAL) I have worked with older children who are on the spectrum and have had work stations and individ…

our reception teacher and i are moderating tomorrow - 40-60+ band and she has been told if children come into reception as secure in any area they should start year 1 work as elg should not be looked at until summer term. e.g. in c+l listening and attention we have Maintains attention, concentrates and sits quietly during appropriate activity. Two-channelled attention – can listen and do for short span. our more able will achieve these by july, but then have nothing to work towards for first 2 terms in reception. but i would put them as secure. and at her moderation she was told they have to achieve all sorts of things to be secure in band, not just eyo/dm band statem…

New to nursery!

Hello, This is my first post (of many I imagine!) I have worked in my school for three years now, last year I covered ppa having come back from 4 months maternity leave. I was in nursery for 4 weeks but other than those few weeks I have zero nursery experience. This year I am running the nursery, I am responsible for potentially 78 children and two nursery nurses and a TA. My issue is...well everything, the planning, the daily routine, the management of the huge space. I constantly doubt myself as my nursery nurses have 30 years experience between them. My head teacher appears to be confident in me and she is very supportive but I am so confused.i have read the eyfs docu…

Hi all Could really do with some advice. I have two children who for differing reasons I am unsure how what assessment to judgement to make. One child is a selective non talker he doesn't say a word in pre-school but communicates through gesture and sign. However at home talks for England. Now we have asked for some evidence / obs of this for his file so we can get a true picture of what he can do. However looking at the judgements in the EYFS under speaking I am unsure where to put him because of the drastic difference in behaviour. If we were to grade on what he does at home it would be well within the 30-40 months age bracket and probably more. However when y…

Adapting activity for SEN child

Hello all, This is my first post here. My name is Usma and i am a EYTS trainee. Really enjoying it so far. Are there any other EYTS trainee's on here? I am planning an activity with the Preschoolers (3-5 years) on acceptable behaviour inside the nursery as there is alot of running, standing on chairs and shouting. I plan on doing this through a circle time activity where the children and I discuss how we think we should behave when indoors. I then plan to write the "rules" up on a display board with pictures of children demonstrating the positive behaviours. There is a child who has autism (not sure how severe). As part of my training i need to show how i ada…

Hi I have a child with Down Syndrome in my class who has made great progress in all areas over the last year apart from in his fine motor and writing. We are using both the EYFS and PIVOTs to assess him so are able to assess little steps in progress as well as moving through the ages and stages. Of course, this area is often a 'problem' area for children with Down Syndrome but I'm just wondering whether there is anything else that might encourage him to make-marks and develop his motor skills further. He has exercises that he does everyday from his physio to develop his core, shoulder and arms muscles. We do finger gym twice a week (which is differentiated so he is in t…

Does anyone have a lovely idea for a way to celebrate all the nationalities we have in a wall display? I thought about a map with pictures of the children and staff around any countries they have a connection with but then most people would need to be only in England so it might look a bit silly.
