Baseline Assessment

How do you do your baseline assessments and when? We are a pre-school and have quite a few 2yr olds. Does the 2yr old progress check count as baseline assessment? However we won't do those til later in the term when we know the children better. This will not show their progress from when they first started. I would be grateful if you could give any examples of your formats. Anita

Hi all, We have a mixed age group of children at our setting from very high level 3yr olds to very low level 2 year olds. I am finding it difficult to plan activities for our little ones as they seem so low in terms of development. I've planned their next steps but since they come back after the summer and the couple of new ones we had, I think I may have set them too high (only 16-26 month age bracket). I think it is more the fact that they want to explore all the new things around them instead of doing a set activity. Our improvement advisor said that we should do an adult led activity every session, based on children's next steps/interests. Do you plan …

Hi, What does your planning look like at this time of year? Mine is consists of little key group activities and lots of 'reinforcement of routine' type on-going adult interaction prompts. Not many enhancements so far as still very much getting to know children, keeping resources minimal while children get use to the choice on offer (in some cases, I've further reduced the choice!)? Does that sound similar to yours? Green Hippo x

I am looking for ideas to encourage a child with language difficulties to 'begin to ask simple questions'. What do you do to develop this? Many thanks!

Hi All When observing children at an activity do you try to incorporate all 3 areas ie playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically with one observation? Or do you also incorporate each of the 3 subheadings with all 3 areas. My deputy who has just been on a course regarding this seems to think that all of the above need to be written from 1 observation. I am finding this impossible to do, however I can incorporate all areas and sub headings over a period of say half a term. How do you do yours? Thank you
