dev matters as assessment tool

Hello everyone I have been teaching in Early Years for 9 years - I never claim to know everything, but recently I have doubted all that I thought I knew. We use the dev matters for our assessment - entering developing secure - throughout the year. I am currently working with a leading teacher, who seems to be looking at every single statement within each band eg reading - knows print carries meaning and In English print is read from left to right. If a child has more or less all the statements in that band, but hasn't shown they know print carries meaning ie points to print as they 'read', are they said to be working within(developing) or secure? I was always under t…

Hi all, We use Tapestry and love it - just wondering when all you folks that also use tapestry add an observation, when you select outcomes do you look at all outcomes and select any that apply or just the main one than you may be looking to evidence? For example if a child was exploring a pop up toy, would you merely select the physical aspect or would you look at PSED, CL (if babbling, making sounds) etc. Curious!!!

I am having a horrendous time trying to come up with next steps for my children…I have lots of obs…but I really cannot see an obvious next step…they are pretty much working at expected levels. At other times or for a few children who are struggling, its that I cannot choose...there are many options but which should I commit to. We are using in the moment planning so Im always responding to their play and developing, adding things, modelling, demonstrating etc…and children are making good progress. So when I come to identifying and recording my monthy next steps (focusing on one aspect of development per child) I feel like im forcing something….its so much effort…its b…

Hi, I could really do with some ideas on what you would expect to see in a nursery child who is working at 40-60 emerging in writing. The reason I'm asking is I feel F2 are expecting quite a lot more than before. All replies much appreciated

Hi I would like to ask our opinion on what "Understand that they can use lines to enclose a space and then begin to use these shapes to represent objects" from Development Matters EAD. It's probably something simple but I'm not sure. Is it using materials to make, for example, a sty and putting pigs in it on the farm? Or am I being silly? Sorry V

I am going to be new to reception and the only teacher. Current teacher plans by topic and not objective led planing. I really want to try objective led planning. Read a few books and to it seems the way to go. Few things I need help with. I will need to do a baseline first few weeks to know where the children are. How do you plan for this and any practical tips would be great. Next thinking of doing a plan of dates etc that really need to be covered over the year like divali and seasons etc. How do you plan an overview for each term? Does anyone have weekly sheet with objectives they wish to cover and cp enhancements? My minds abit of a blur trying to work it all out.

Hi everyone, I am going around in circles and getting nowhere at the moment! I am trying to work out a way of deciding when children are not on -track within nursery. We use development matters to highlight which age band children are working within. However as you know the age bands cross over such as 30-50 then 40-60+ etc. We are looking at using the descriptors - beginning, developing, securing to show where a child is within each band. However, as a nursery teacher with three intakes of children I teach some children currently aged 54 months and some aged 42. The end of nursery expectation is that the children will be beginning to be working within 40-60+ months,…

Good afternoon, Does anyone here use Anna Ephgrave's in the moment planning and learning journey systems with Tapestry? We have been using Tapestry for 2 years now but wish to move forward with our planning which just isn't working for us at present. I'm concerned that staff will be duplicating paperwork if they are completing a focus child learning journey which then will need to be transferred onto tapestry. Would be interested to hear from anyone else using both Tapestry and In the moment planning. Thanks
