It's just not getting any better! We have always been a full pre-school until this years intake (due to schools beginning to take 2 yr olds but that's another issue!) and so have never been in the situation of having such a huge age difference. So we now find ourselves in the situation where we have a current age range of: 2 x 4 yr olds (who will leave in July for Reception) 6 x 3 yr olds (who will leave in July for Reception) 13 x 2 yr olds (who will all turn 3 and therefore leave to go to school nursery in July) 3 x 2 yr olds (who have only turned 2 since September) Our problem is we are all in 1 hall and with us having to take children from the moment t…

So earlier this week I posted a query (or last week it's all a bit of a blur to be honest)! I am focusing on the Farm topic for inspection and I got some wonderful ideas for focused lessons primarily from this website but I wondered if I could pick anyone's brains for some thoughts/ideas. I am using these activities for my teacher led activities but I am roughly one activity short for the days they are coming in. Patterns (linked to fields) Vegetable sorting box Farmer Duck Storysack Baking Wool and Weaving This means that I ideally need another teacher led activity my brain has reached shut down mode. HELP!!!

Jehovah's witness

How do you cater for the Jehovah's Witness faith during Christmas? In consultation with parents, our JW child has made a 'winter' cake instead of a Christmas cake and a 'winter' card (green handprints to form a fir tree on black sugar paper with 'snow' added). He joins in with 'Christmas' role play e.g. grotto, reindeer etc.; the parents are not altogether happy about this but I have said that I do not intend to tell him he is not allowed to play in these areas! The mother has accepted this, but when Dad brought him in last week and the little boy made a beeline for the reindeer antlers, Dad told him to take them off. Almost everything at nursery reflects Christmas, but w…

Hi All, I am looking for some inspiration! I have arranged for parents to come in for an hour each day next week to join in some christmas crafts with their children. However, I am really struggling for cost effective ideas of things children could make to take away? Would be great to hear from any other settings who have done a similar thing and the ideas you have. Thanks in advance

Hi All, No idea if I have put this in the right section. Relatively new to this wonderful site! I work in Dubai, Head of Foundation Stage and we are going to be inspected the 2nd day back after the Christmas holidays. Oh joy. I just wanted to know what you all think about trying to create an engaging learning environment, we are not nearly well resourced enough and on last years inspection (I had just arrived at the school) they were criticised for giving the children worksheets and not having enough enquiry based learning. I have spent a lot of time trying to resource the department (15 classes) to the tune of £35,000. This does not get you a lot beli…

Hi there just tackling standard 1.1, for my EYPS which is. "Know and understand how children learn and develop and how this can be affected by individual circumstances." Our tutor has recommended/suggested that we use evidence in the for of an IEP or individual planning sheet for any child, My setting does not have any special needs children at the moment and so are not filling out IEPs, and unfortunately we do not fill out individual learning plans for our children. Does any one do this, if so how often for each child, and do you have a template that you might be able to share. Very much appreciate any help on this. Thanks all

I am the manager of a day nursery, and we have been sending development summaries/ reports home to parents for many many years. We always used to send one home every six months. The pre-school room then changdd this to every term, as we had a number of children attending 'term time only' and has we could only offer a few of these spaces, the children occasionally changed each term. We have been sending home a report and holding a 'development meeting' (parents evening!) each term. However a number of staff members feel the summaries are too long and descriptive and are not necessary every term. How often do others send home a summary, and how long are they? do you send ju…

DM Statements: Mathematics

Where would you put a child (in terms of DM statements) who, when playing in C.I. play, is able to say the number of spots he can see on a die without any hesitation. Clearly he can relate the pattern of spots to the corresponding number. He is 49m and quite able in this aspect (mathematics: numbers). Any thoughts?

I am planning to read The Hairy Toe by Daniel Postgate to my nursery children. Has anyone used this book and did it have any adverse effect on any of the children? Your comments would be appreciated! :1b
