Hello I'm just wondering what your thoughts are about diahorrea.....I had a incident last week, actually two. The first one was a boy who had a very runny 'poo' all down legs, watery, through clothing. The mother (who's a dr) informs me I should not send a child home unless 3 bouts! We normally send a child home instantly after diahorrea. Second child - doesn't normally use our toilets for a number 2, however went 3 times in 2 hours, the last time was watery and the ones prior 'soft' the mother was called to collect and reminded of the 48hr rule. However sent her child in 24hrs later with another mother. Said child was sent home. Mother since has argued, cont…

Hi all. I do the planning for children's interests but as I'm not getting much in the way of observations or notes from some staff, their children are missing out in the planning as they're only getting anything I happen to observe planned for. (I hope that makes sense) Do your staff do their own planning for their own children.. how does it work, do they link up or is it just a different planning sheet for each person, separate from the general planning?

tracking advice nursery

just completed initial assessments of children and worried about showing progress through writing strand by end of year. we have a few children who 'sometimes give meaning to marks as they draw and paint', 30-50 months band, so would you consider this to be emerging or consolidating? as there are only 2 statements it could be argued that it's consolidating? but by end of year they would be expected to make a years progress so it looks like they should be achieving half the dm statements for 40-60 months but this looks extremely challenging for a child to go from scribbling and ascribing meaning to marks to achieving half of these. am worried at end of year i will be t…

I am really struggling to make the home corner in my setting exciting and invlting. I really tried with real objects but for the local advisors this was not enough and it did not look inviting. The home corner furniture is a cooker, fridge, sink, and oven all from community play. thank you Soph xx

Outdoor use in this weather

Using the outdoor area can be a bit more challenging now that it is cold and the unexpected rain and mud ruins resources you don't have time to put away. Some of our staff are extremely reluctant to go outside, even though everyone should be going out at some point during the week and I can only assume this is because it's cold now. We've tried rotas, timings etc but they just don't go outside. We've offered to buy waterproofs for everyone but they say they have their own (but haven't brought them in), We have a fantastic outdoor space which we are really lucky to have and I do understand about the conditions now it isn't summer.. Does anyone have any inspiration f…

Focused Observations
by Guest- 9 replies

Does anyone still do focused observations? I plan for them, but often they do not get done, or at least not all the children targeted because other things just get in the way - workload, absence of children, time etc, etc. At a one-to-one meeting with an EY advisor last year, I was told that we should be doing at least 5 focused assessments over the week - we can't manage even 2 per week, and this just leads to stress within the nursery  and makes me feel that I am not doing my job adequately . I'd really like to know what others do and would appreciate your comments.

we usually have the problem of parents 'dumping and running'......now we have the opposite end of the spectrum, we cant get mum to leave !! we have discussed a settling in period with mum, she had agreed to stay for a little while, then leave. this week she came in and stayed for 1 hour, then waited in the lobby - which is fine, but she kept looking through the lobby window -and evey time she did this her little one saw her and cried for her, a member of staff got her a chair to sit on, and asked her to try to keep away from the window . 10 mins later ( whilst her child was happily playing -engaged in an activity with others, and hadnt cried for mum) she came back in…

Hi everyone. We have been allowed to buy ourselves a new storage unit of slidy trays for our mark making area - woo hoo! We have quite a good mark making resourced table but I just know how good some of you are at those ideas that we all go 'oh wow, love that idea'.. So what could we put in our new labelled drawers..
