I work in an international school and have a class of 15 children from the age of 2-4 years all in one classroom. I have a new boy who started about 5 weeks ago, he is 2 and a half and so far he does not self initiate any activities, I have to take him to a toy/activity and help him play. He doesn't speak in the setting but speaks a lot at home according to his parents. He just follows me around all day, even if we are playing cars and I get up to get a drink of water he follows me! I was hoping by now he would have begun to get used to the setting and feel more confident. Is this normal for 2 year old behaviour? I have only ever taught reception and higher before, so thi…

Does anyone have any information about what effect wearing wellies all the time might have on the feet of children around 2-3 years old? We seem to have more and more who never come in a pair of shoes of any kind and only wellies.

Winter wonderland topic 0-1yrs

Hello all, At our nursery we do monthly topics (which I don't like but that's another story!) and December we have decided on winter wonderland. I'm looking to pick people's brains on what activities we can do for this topic within the baby room (0-1yrs), that does not centre around Christmas. It seems all the ideas so far are Christmas related. Any ideas or activities that have worked well in the past for others would be greatly received. :0) Thanks in advance.

Dear all, I'm currently in Africa working for a charity that has opened a Children's Centre following the same format as in the UK. I'm here to help train a new set of trainee practioners. Unfortunately, my experience of the Early years is all 3-5 years so am struggling to add to the training for children under 3. I'm also trying to help with the practice and have concerns that the children in the smallest age group (1-2 1/2 yrs) are not getting the best from the centre. This is not due to lack of care but more to do with lack of experience as this is the only childcare setting of its kind in the country. What I would like to know is the best way of organising…

New Baby who will not settle

Please can anyone offer advice for a baby who will not settle. She is now 15 months and has been with us for 3 months and still becomes distressed for most of the time. No amount of cuddles and distraction will pacify her. Her keyworker is starting to become rather demoralised and although we encourage other staff to give her breaks throughout the day, she says she can still hear the crying. I have found singing to her and looking out the window helps. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Beatrix123

Putting baby to sleep on their front!

We had a new baby (5 months) start today and mum asked her key worker to put her on her front to sleep. I have said that Mum needs to sign a form stating this and pointed out that this goes against current guidance but mum maintains baby sleeps better this way but I am still uncomfortable doing this. Has anyone else faced this issue.

Hi folks! Just a query, can you share with me if you will please what you charge for 2 year old care? I am hoping to provide 2 year old places from September and our county will offer £5 per hour for the funded hours. Do you all get a similar rate and what then do you charge your non funded children? Thanks for your thoughts!

Highchair tray play for babies

Hi! I'm doing my EYP placement with babies at the moment and I'd like to put together some highchair tray activities for the 8 month old. The staff put out trays of interesting dry stuff for exploration but on the floor where the toddlers tip it up and empty it out. Little chap doesn't get a look in! I have very little baby experience and am worrying about the health and safety aspect of highchair tray play given that little chap is bound to eat whatever is put in his tray. If I make playdough, isn't the salt bad for him? If I make jelly, isn't that bad for him because of the sugar content or the artificial sweetener content? I thought about Cheerios but …
