Those of you who subscribe to Nursery World may have been reading their recent article 'EYFS Best Practice: Birth to Three Matters - Back to basics' in which Ann Langston, who contributed to the development of Birth to Three Matters, explains its format, history and importance and tells us why it should be dusted down and put back on the shelf as recommended reading for practitioners as they get ready to implement the revised EYFS. In order to help refresh you memory and give you a chance to revisit the original materials I have managed to find them archived on the DofE site and have added them below....well all of them except one. For some reason 'Being Acknowledged…

I'm getting incredibly excited about our new nursery. We had open mornings last week to show the plans and despite people not being able to actually see the building we have had had so many babies booked in! Anyway, I'm really passionate about the homely feel my baby rooms will have and I've been looking at storage. I want the babies to be able to go and choose resources. In my head I can see low level units with wicker baskets, but I can't seem to find anything quite right in the educational catalogues. What kind of storage do you use in your baby rooms? Thanks x

Does anyone have any experience of working with schemas with very young children - birth to around 16 months? I'm doing a baby placement at the moment and was interested in introducing the staff in the baby room to schemas as a way of thinking about children's play and ways they can develop it, but whilst I can identify schemas in the play of the older babies, I'm struggling with the younger ones (youngest is about 6 months old), I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. Are schemas relevant for such young children?

Baby Who Bites

Hello Everyone I am new to the forum, and would really appreciate some advice. In our Baby room we have a child of 18 months who will continually bite unless she is shadowed. She is very active and likes to be on the go all the time. She seems particularly prone to bite when other children are involved in their play or they have a toy she wants. She receives lots of praise when she shows affection for other babies, and becomes involved in her own play (ie; dancing and music which she loves). For the safey of the other children(some have been biten more than once and she also broke the skin on two occasions) I have requested that each member of staff wat…

I am currently working as a development officer, with special responsibility for Baby and Toddler groups. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas or has noticed a need for a particular workshop/ session that would benefit either the families or leaders of toddler groups. We currently offer Healthy eating and messy play which the groups enjoy, but what else is needed. We thought of treasure baskets, basic cookery or home safety? I know that all of you wonderful early years professionals will help? Thanks

Hi! I am currently doing EYP via the GPP route I have begun a placement in an excellent nursery as there is a 'gap' in my experience with working with babies under 20 months, which I need to fill for my task 1. I have a limited amout of time to work on something to implement, and have hopefully decided to go with improving planning for babies outdoors as this was the only weak area I found. I am looking to gather information on what the EYFS guidance recommends for babies in terms of outdoor, and suggestions I can put to the nursery as to what to do next. I would really appreciate anything anyone can share in relation to how they plan a couple of useful outdoor…

I am currently looking for furniture and designing the layout for the rooms at our new nursery, exciting!!!! At the moment, in our pack away pre-school, we just have a mat on the floor, but we are going to be able to have designated changing areas. I have a couple of questions.... Does anybody have the walk up changing unit? Are they long enough? I've looked at the TTS one and the community playthings one but they just don't look long enough baring in mind that the 2-3 year old room will need them. I have also looked at the ones that attach to the counter top, anybody any experience of these? Is the changing station in the baby room or in a different room? I…

How Do I Find Out Starting Points?

I am preparing for Ofsted coming in a couple of weeks. I've been writting up the obs using the photos I have taken in the past and the daily diarys. I have used these to show what planning I have done at the time. (using the 6 areas and putting in what they have done in each box for that following month) I had done the planning originally when I saw there was a need but not written it down. I've been looking at the Ofsted reports that have been done by the inspector that is coming around and she mentions how she likes people to mention starting points. Is this something like "when E started with us at 9 months she didn't like being on her back. She couldn't turn…
