Hello everyone! I've been in Nursery for 3 years and in September will be returning to Reception. I was just wondering how everyone is organising their days in Reception now? My current school, which I'm leaving in July, is pretty formal with 'playtime' and assembly a phonics session, literacy and maths session as well as topic! each day so not a good indicator... One of the teachers I will be working with in September is very keen on less formal learning and more child initiated and objective led planning (the person she works with at the moment says she's a bit paperwork shy though!!) and I wondered what everyone else is doing at the moment as it's been a litt…

Hi, I have been teaching Reception for 5 years now and in sept im going to be moving into a mixed R/1 class, 9 rec and the rest year 1. I have no idea how to approach the organisation of lessons, do I do adult led sessions for all or do I allow year 1's to do CI??? Does anyone have any planning examples or timetable examples for an R/1 class? Thanks!

At a recent Ofsted seminar, we were encouraged to implement Starting Points assessments. What do others do in their setting? About to take over as supervisor rather suddenly and need some help!! Thank you.

Hi folks, I wondered if I could get some view on the best approach for one of our pre-schoolers. She is very bright and reading independently. She forms most letters correctly and wants to write all the time. what I'm finding though is that she wants it all to be correct and won't use her own knowledge to sound out what she wants to write, so she's asking all the time 'what comes next'. I'm not really sure of the preferred route! Would it be better for me to tell her which letter to write? Or encourage her to make her own attempts? Any advice would be very much appreciated! I'm writing reports and was going to discuss this point - but as mum is a Reception teach…

Hi, I have recently taken a post on in a school and to my surprise they use cursive script in reception. All the children have to learn to write in cursive writing. I personally don't like this and feel alot are struggling. This may be just a personal opinon or do I have a point What are people's views on this?

Hello all, I need to do some work on finding 1 more or less than a given number with my class. I feel like I've been doing the same activities for forever and would like to freshen things up a bit. Have any of you any ideas/activities/enhancements that you've used to support this objective that you'd be happy to share?

Traditional Tales assembly

Hi I have a reception class of 20 children and our annual class assembly will soon be upon us. This year the format has changed slightly. Last year we got together with another class and acted out Goldilocks and the three bears - the music teacher bought an out of the ark production. This year it is just my class. I have some half formed ideas in my head about what I want to do but looking for some inspiration please. I want everyone to have a line or two. I want at least two songs but I don't want it just to be an acting out of one particular tale. Something like "Once upon a time..." or a journey into storyland. Any foolproof ideas or suggestions greatly appr…

Hi Just wondered if any of you wonderful people could help me. We are due Ofsted anytime as we have been waiting since 2007. Next week we are having a pretend ofsted to try and prepare us. This is only my second year teaching and I have no experience of ofsted. I teach reception and our topic is all about where food comes from and being healthy. Due to headteachers wishes we are quite formal setting. I wondered if anyone had some good ideas for literacy and maths input and independent activities. Also need some ideas for the continuous provision. In maths we are thinking of doing halving and literacy we are looking at the healthy wolf story. Any ideas will be greatly …
