Polar Regions

Hi I hope someone can help, after the Christmas Hols. I'm going to do a mini topic on ice which I am hoping will led onto the polar regions. I have never taught this before and spent most of yesterday trying to find information and activities-not having much luck with activities. I'm going to set up a small world in the tuff spot to cover The Artic with polar bears, fake snow, etc. And i'm hoping to get an igloo from Ikea for role play. I will place large ice blocks and penguins in the water tray to represent Antarctica but I'm struggling with other areas of the class room-I'm going to get lots of knowledge and understanding, but need something to cover PSRN, CD, CLL &a…

Letters And Sounds

I would be interested to know what other Reception teachers' views are on Letters and Sounds. I feel that Phase 1 has some excellent ideas and I completely agree with having multi-sensory systematic and sequential approach to phonics but I am not convinced about the order that the letters are introduced in Phase 2 (why are ck, ll, ff introduced so early?). Also, in Phase 3, are children really expected to learn and remember 4 different vowel digraphs in a week? Surely I'm not the only person to think this is madness!

Hi, I am going to be taking a writing group of 6 boys every week with the aim of encouraging independant writing about things they are interested in and im a little confused about how much 'direction' to give them as i know im suppose to enourage choice and independant as much as possible. I am not their class teacher but teach them one day a week. For example i was thinking of this as a possible 20 mins group lesson. Children hold a toy car. Ask the chn to describe the car i.e. colour, the parts of the car and how fast/slow it goes by testing it. Write down the words the children come up with on the whiteboard. Then the children select their writing materials, i was …

I am a bit confused i am a reception teacher and have been in reception for about 5 years now We have had a visit from our sip recently and prior to this we have submitted planning to managment. We got feedback we were told we need to differentiate on our Areas of Learning planning and also mention pupils that are on Free school meals, who have english as an additional language and anyone we feel are underachieving and what we are doing for these children that may b different. (Apparenty the government are keen for thi…

Hi I have been offered to do EYPS training and it will be funded for me as I am in an area of deprivation. I am a reception teacher with 15 years experience mostly in KS1 and I have a BEd hons Primary (5-7) I have been in reception for the last 3 years and am pretty confident in my practice. Has anyone with similar experience done the training and what did you think? I am always looking to learn and improve my practice but I just want advice about whether the course is worth doing or whether I would be taught what I already know Deb

Hi This is my first ever post on here, despite spending the last 12 weeks loving all of the ideas, I have not had the confidence to submit...so here goes. In September I started a new school, got the role of deputy head teacher and despite spending the last 9 years in Year 6, the head decided to put me into Reception. I have never previously been in a reception class and the whole process is just so so different. I have got my headteacher and the LA advisor coming into watch my maths lesson on the 8th December. I don't now where to start and would really appreciate any ideas out there - struggle with the idea of having other things in my classroom happening whilst I …

Hi, I'm sitting here writing the 'next steps' on the long observations done last week and I'm questioning whether what we are writing is 'correct'. In the next steps box we tend to write what we need to do to develop that child's learning, based on our assessment of the child' learning. So, basically answering the question 'what do we need to do next for this child as regards the environment, the provision, the staffing, the interactions?'. E.g. Introduce x to different tools for joining materials, model their correct use and encourage x to hand them carefully and use their correct names e.g. hole-punch and treasury tags, split pins, elastic bands. Then on the planning w…
