Tricky Words
by Guest- 21 replies

Hi This is my first year back in reception in a long, long time. While my children are picking up their phonics well, we are not doing so well with the tricky words. So was wondering if anyone has any good ideas they would share for teaching and practising the tricky words either in whole class phonics session or as part of the children's independent activities. Thank-you

Hi I currently work in a small reception class. We have had a FS consultant in and she says it is fine to get a good grounding in phase 1 before moving on to phase 2 - which we are about to do. Another teacher in a nearby school has come in and been mortified that we haven't started phase 2 sounds. On assessment at the start of term they really didn't seem ready. Now I am so worried that I have done the wrong thing. Please help!!!

Handwriting Song Help Please
by Guest heleng- 4 replies

I can remember part of a song but need help with the title or the rest of it please. It was supposed to be to get children ready for a handwriting session and it started something like 'Stretch your fingers, stretch your fingers, open them wide, open them wide'. Can anyone help or give me another song. It is to start off a session where we have lots of additional mark making activities practicing pre-writing skills on offer as well as continuous provision.

Timetables....again!
by Guest- 0 replies

I have had a look through the resources but wondered if anyone would share their Rec/Year 1 timetables. We are constantly trying to find a best fit but lurch from feeling we are not giving Year1 enough input to trying to find time for observations etc. Expectations are quite high for children in school so we feel the pressure a bit! I have 28 children, equal mix of year groups, outside area (not covered) is not near classroom (ie can't see it from classroom) but do have TA. Everyone I talk to seems to find it a bit of a balancing act but I wondered if anyone had anything that had particularly worked for them. Thanks in advance. xx

ONE OF MY PARENTS ASKED ME FOR ADVICE AND I WAS A BIT STUMPED. HER 23 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER IS GOING THROUGH A PHASE OF DRAWING ON THE SETTEE/WALLS ETC. THE USUAL PUNISHMENT FOR BOTH GIRLS IS NORMALLY 2 MINS ON THE NAUGHTY STEP BUT THIS DOESN'T BOTHER HER AT ALL. SHE KNOWS WHY SHE IS ON THE STEP AND WHY THE DRAWING IS WRONG BUT STILL DOES IT AGAIN. I SUGGESTED USING ANOTHER PUNISHMENT THAT WOULD BOTHER HER -APPARENTLY NOT BEING ABLE TO WEAR HER FAVOURITE T SHIRT WOULD WORK ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS??

Hi Everyone, I have been given some money to spend on my outside area and was just wondering what your favourite resource was? We have the usual construction, sand, water, easels and I am after some new inspiration. Hope to hear from you all soon Thanks Rachel

Maturational Tasks
by Guest- 5 replies

Good morning I am baffled by the term "maturational tasks" for an assignment. Wondering why I haven't come across it before I would be very grateful if anyone could simplify this for me. To put it in context the question is: "Explain the maturational tasks of a specified age group of children" I have already done the physical, language, social, emotional, behavioural, cognitive and moral in the previous question. Thinking maybe I'm getting too old for this!!

Little Book More Than I Expected!

I was looking for a little inspiraion for more hands on fun activities and took a chance on this book. It is not what I was expecting I thought it was going to have links to cooking, but it is great! Really exciting ideas for using stuff which I just hadn't thought of! Can't wait to try out my salad spinner fireworks, with glitter of course! It gives links to stories which I will come back to when Goldilocks comes round! Even though I was not going to spend any money on school stuff - I am glad I did!

Focussed Work In Books - Reception
by Guest- 6 replies

Do you already have lots of work in books? I have the youngest reception children in my school, this year almost all summer born and also several with delayed development. So far I haven't put anything in work books, I have done lots of practical focussed activties because I've felt this would be more beneficial to my class. I was asked yesterday if I had any number work in books (we have a whole school focus on number at the minute), I haven't but I do have records of my focussed activties and observations. Just wondering what others do, and having a debate with myself over if work in books would be to help my children learn or just for me to prove i've …
