Listening Area

Hi all, I'm new to the site so forgive me if I'm npt using it correctly! I'm in the process of setting up my classroom for September, I'm an NQT so this is my first ever class! I'm just a bit stumped when it comes to the listening area, what activities do you normally have in this area? I was thinking of a cd player with number/letter songs and rhymes but I feel these would be more suited to the maths/writing areas as they are not specifically focussing on listening skills? Help!

Hi I am new to the forum and I'm hoping to pick lots of brains for this one! Could we start a thread on amazing books we have come across for Reception aged children (or younger)? I am the new deputy principal at a kindergarten based in Hong Kong (first leadership role) and I have been given a wad of cash to spend on our library. I don't feel our library caters for our children so I really want to bring it into the 21st century! I have taught Kindergarten age before but have been out of the loop for a while as I taught Upper Primary for a few years before taking a career break and focusing on our family life. Would appreciate any help! Thank you

Hi everyone, My topic for this term is The Tiger who Came to Tea and I was just wondering if you had any ideas for trips related to this topic? All I can think of is maybe taking them to Pizza Express so they can make their own pizzas. ( like working in a cafe) Anything else? Thanks Rachel x

Autumn Term Planning

Hello! I am starting to get back into school mode now and have been thinking about planning for terms 1 and 2. I was wondering how much planning people do for the first few weeks back? I teach reception and was thinking it will be hard to plan for the children's learning when I will need a few weeks to get to know them. I can use their transfer forms as a basis but not sure what my medium/long term plans are supposed to look like! What are other reception class teachers doing? Thank you! Claire

Correcting Pencil Grips Any Tips
by Guest- 19 replies

Hi last year in reception the majority of my children came into school could not hold their pencils correctly. There were about a third of my children who had had no interest in markmaking pre school and had therefore hardly held a pencil/paintbrush etc but the rest of the children were writing their own names and had good pencil control but their pencil grip was still awful. We worked really hard with the children using various pencil grips, getting parents involved and helping children to reposition if they weren't holding their pencil correctly but we found it almost impossible to reverse the bad habits of those who had already learnt to hold a pencil incorrectly. I am…

Do you use assessment for learning in your EYFS classroom? I am trying to write my masters essays and i have sort of taken this route and now not sure about where i am going. The aim of my essay is to better understand AFL and how this can be applied/ adapted to EYFS and whether this better undertsnading of AFL will have a positive impact on my classroom practice and children's learning. so i am wondering do you use AFL techniques/ what do you use and do you feel it has been benifital or is it just another education fad! Things i current use in my reception class are talk partners, self/ peer evaluation though this is a work in progress! and modelling. oh as wel…
