Positional Language

Hi I am a slightly confused final year studnet teacher. Is there any where that says what positional language chidlren should be using by the end of the Foundation Stage? I am introducing positional language using the story 'Where's Spot?' and this introduces the words, behind, inside, in and under. How many more should I introduce? I plan to do this by using photos of a toy Spot around the classroom and outdoor area. I am thinking, on, under/beneath, behind, in, by/next to, on, above, between. I guess a lot of it also depends on what the chidlren know and come up with. Any ideas? Thanks in advance .

Hi everyone wasn't sure where to put this but felt it would be better in this section as we are a maintained nursery. We are full for next academic year 2011/12 with a waiting list of 15(we must be doing something right!) Had a discussion with head today about criteria for entry as some feel they can attend when they want to, taking a week here and ther without explanation, so made phone calls to tell them their place will be taken as we have a waiting list for this year as well. head said sen and looked after children take priorityand then siblings in the main school but not sure about nursery. My argument was why should some take priority over those who have been on w…

Hi I know it is early in the term but we are starting to think about September and our new entrants. We would really like to change the way we do our meetings to parents and possibly have some new ideas for the activities the children do. We currently have a parent meeting where we talk to the parents about routines and starting times and the parents then look around the classrooms. I feel that this is all a bit formal now and would like it be a more relaxed occasion for teachers and parents. The children are then invited to the reception class assembly, a teddy bear picnic with parents and some story time sessions where the parents sit in a next door room…

Hi, am just looking for some ideas/reassurance. One of my days as a part timer is in a Reception class. On my timetable I have a half hour slot for Maths. This has always been some sort of reinforcement of the topic that has been covered in a larger carousel of activities that week during the mornings - eg heavy and light, adding one more. However now observations and Ofsted are imminent and I am wondering if I am doing enough - usually stuff with whiteboards, or number fans. I can't do a carousel because there is a smaller purely number carousel another afternoon. I am thinking it needs to be something more investigative, problem solving ?? but only have 30 minu…

Hi there, trying to get back into work mode! Next week we are doing the 3 Billy Goats Gruff in nursery. I am struggling to think of ideas. Done some searches, but nothing much comes up. So far I have building bridges in construction, creating small world/retelling, acting out the story and sequencing the story. Stuggling for some creative ideas mainly. Any good suggestions for this book please? Many thanks

Help! I job share in a mixed reception year 1 class. It is a small class only 8rec and 11year 1 but am becoming increasingly depressed about work. The year 1's are the young year 1's all June, July Aug birthdays and reception all the Sep to Dec birthdays. The school has had lots of problems which are hopefully on the way to being resolved which I admit is an obvious contributing factor - it has been a very difficult and testing year so far. This is my first year in a mixed class though have been teaching for years previously in in Nursery and reception. I love foundation stage and early years and our unit got good from ofsted in last years inspection so must have been ok.…

Hi, I'm new to the forum. Can anybody help me? I have 4 weeks till my class are to perform a class assembly (30 Reception children) to the parents. We will be learning about growing. Last year we did a very successful Assembly based on the story of the Hungry Caterpillar. That was in the Summer Term when I think the children are more ready for it. This year I don't have that luxury? Any ideas? Cheers Steve.
