Literacy & Numeracy?
by Guest- 2 replies

Hi, I am new to EYFS having moved down to FS2 in November from KS2. I am struggling with the need to teach literacy and maths, but without the formality of the 'lesson' that would be taught further up school. With the concept of 'child led' planning, do people still 'block' literacy into Units, and if so what units do you do?- I can't find a link on the Primary Strategy website anywhere. Any ideas would be much appreciated! Also, in my class I do individual sound books for each child, a personalised word box of HF words, and reading books. Does anyone else do similar, and if so how do you manage it? It seems most of my afternoons are taken up with sounds, wo…

Help

Hello I have just joined the Forum as I have been put in reception at the last minute to cover up until half term. I am an assistant head teacher for Inclusion who is usually none class based. However our reception teacher left at Christmas having only joined us recently and our new appointment cannot start until after February half term. I have a class of 33 children with 25 boys and 6 girls. I am struggling with setting up enough independent activities to keep the class going all week. Has anybody got any ideas, websites, books, resources that you have found useful for planning. Would welcome any ideas!

Walking Through The Jungle

Hi I wanted to do Walking Through The Jungle for an interview lesson, it is only 20 minutes. Has anyone done this with their reception class or as an interview lesson before? I think I'd like to get hold of the animals though if I can so that I have props. I would also like to do a plan of activities plus extension activities etc....different areas of learning for follow up activities that I can talk about in the interiew. Any suggestions for the lesson appreciated! Does anyone have a general blank lesson plan? Things lost on my computer so not sure how to do it!!! Thanks Amelie

Interview Lesson

Hi I would really appreciate any suggestions as to what I can do for an interview I have got next week. I have been asked to deliver a twenty minute, whole class session to a Reception class. I don't know the children and have been given no indication of their current interests etc, the letter just says it can be on any subject of my choosing and will then form part of the discussion at the interview. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated, Thank you.

Introducing Independent Challenges
by Guest- 7 replies

I was thinking of introducing challenges for the children to complete during the week and wondered if anyone else does this. I thought they could be linked to different areas of learning and areas of the learning environment. I'm not sure how to organise it - how many per week, how do children record if they have done it, rewards for those that do, thought about using talk tins to record the challenges on? I'd love to hear from anyone who does this and how it works in your setting. Many thanks

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to get some help and advice as I feel like I am going mad! I started as an NQT in a Reception class with 4 Lower Ability Year 1 children in September and feel whatever I do I am doing it wrong and there just isn't enough time to do everything. I have a TA for the morning and in that time she takes the Y1 for half an hour for ELS, a phonics booster group for 20 minutes and one to one with a SEN child for 15 mins as well as hearing and changing readers twice a week. My Y1s also have assembly every day for 15 mins and a play time for 15 mins in the morning that my Reception don't have. I teach Literacy and Numeracy every morning with input o…

Hi all, I'm an NQT and am back at school on Tuesday, have just had a look at my planning and have realised that im not planning from childrens interests. I have gotten so used to planning how ive been told by my mentor (who isnt foundation trained) that I have totally forgotten how to do child initiated planning! Help!! Would really appreciate hearing how you all do it in your settings/planning sheets. i teach 30 reception children to give you an idea of my setting. Thanks in advance!! Laura
