Involving Parents In Observations
by Guest- 5 replies

Hi, I have just taken over as the Early Years Leader in my new school and I have a parents information meeting on Tuesday. I am trying to put something together to explain to the parents about sharing their observations from home. I have read a few things related to this on the forum. If you have done this how have you introduced it to the parents, have you given them a list of observations that would be relevant, for example, for physical development: throwing and catching a ball, holding a pencil, using scissors...etc...or have you just introduced the idea of them sharing observations and then seen what came in? Not to sure where to start. Thanks

Hello , I am usually very creative in my thinking but I am trying really hard today and failing. A large group of our children's interests this week have centred around playing with a buzz Lightyear figure they found in a box of assorted figures. It has been very popular and has fairly encourages them to share -but I can't think of an activity we could plan to extend and move them on - any ideas ????? Dizzzz

Cil Planning Boards
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi - Any advice about how to get the wee ones trained to use the planning boards for CIL. OUrs are meant to take their laminated name card and stick it onto a picture board for the area they want to go to, such as creative, small world, ICT etc. Then if they change areas, should move their name card onto that board. They aren't doing it - and at tidy up time it's a mess getting them to put their names back on their group board. Early days I know but getting it in the neck from the (very experienced) TA. Have modelled what to do, and before CIL have talked about it to recap what I want them to do.... Tks

Had a consultant in this week (Reception) who said that child initiated learning can only be classed as such when all practitioners are involved and no adult led focus group is taking place. For instance, if one adult is leading a focus group of 5 or 6 children and the rest of the class are selecting from Continuous Provision supported by another adult, then the children in CP, even though an adult is involved, are not engaged in child initiated learning but rather that this session should be classed as focus time. I'd be interested to hear other's views on this.

Elmer

Hello! I am hoping to focus on the Elmer book with my reception class next week. I have planned for the children to design their own unique Elmer, help decorate a large Elmer cut out for display and use it as a base for discussion during circle time. Does anyone have any other ideas of how I could use this book as a theme for other activities? Thanks Claire

At my school key stage 1 use the strategies to plan literacy and numeracy, they follow the strands as it is laid out and pretty much use the same plans from one year to the next. Results were quite low at the end of ks1 last year and I just wondered what people's views were on using the strategies. Also I heard the strategies were being scrappyed next year - is this true? I have been tasked with tracking assessment and coming up with a action plan to improves standards which is difficult for me to do when i am in foundation stage and have never taught in KS1. Thanks in advance.... K x

Lesson Observation

Our performance management is starting fairly swiftly this year and I have my observation next week! I am really struggling with what to do for it, I have been told it needs to be Literacy and I need to show some kind of progression. Next week will be the 1st time the children are in full time and I obviously don't want to keep them on the carpet for too long. My original planning for next week involved more 'getting to know' activites and lots of observation so I don't have a Literacy theme for next week as such. Can anyone help? It is my 4th year however I feel like my brain is still half on holiday mode

Hi, The reception teacher in our unit has been asked to do 10 minutes of handwriting (on sheets) practise everyday, altogether, from the beginning of Reception. They already learn to form the letters through the daily phonics programme. What are others' thoughts about the appropriateness of this? We have lots of other resources in the CP which support the development of fine motor & gross motor skills. Thanks Green Hippo x

Intergrated Day

This is my first post, but I have read many a helpful post and I feel confident someone will be able to help my situation. It has been our first week as a Foundation Stage Unit (LEA title not mine) our setting now takes children from 2 upwards, ( including Reception children). We are all in one very big indoor/outdoor space, which has many corners and parts that can be awkward to see from another spot. So now I am wondering just how we are going to observe the children. We have ample EY assistants (our version of Key People). In the past, before the 2's joined us, 1 grown-up would focus on 5 children a week, chat through their learning on a Friday and fill in the…
