High Frequency Words

We measure how many tricky words and decodable words our Reception children can read as they are leaving us, using the lists in letters and sounds. Do other people do this? If you do, how many do children know? Obviously this varies a lot from child to child. Our figures are always greeted by the year 1 teachers with a fair bit of tutting, which rather depresses me, but perhaps we just aren't trying hard enough. Our results vary from 0 to 100 words read with 2/3rd children reading more than 20 words and half reading over 40. We are in a very deprived area, but I really don't know what we should expect. I am VERY committed to other outcomes like problem solving, creativi…

Does anyone assess their children regularly on the keywords from letters and sounds - our reception teachers assess the children each week on which ones they can read and spell and only send home the next list they need ( they have divided the words into lists ) once they can read these - I'm not sure this is the best use of time when it is so frequent so any advice or views would be appreciated

Teaching Vowels In Reception
by Guest- 13 replies

Hope someone can help- I am trying to think of a fun way to teach the vowel names to my reception children- we have sang the alphabet and some children know some of the letter names butI wanted to introduce children to vowel names specifically and teach them that most words contain at least one vowel. I would like a catchy/fun/interactive song or activity-any ideas? The idea is to go on to sort ccvcc words into their vowel families/read/spell them.(phase4) The head is observing me and has commented that children further up the school do not seem to know letter names, so I wanted to prove I do this but need some good ideas! Thanks

Reception/year 1 Class

I will be teaching a YearR/1 class next year and would really appreciate some advice. What should the planning look like in order to cover both the EYFS and NC? What should the normal day look like? I currently teach a mixed R/1 class but I'm unhappy with how I do it? It is more geared towards Year 1 which I am not happy about but then I worry about gearing it more to the Year R because of my Year 1 children. Please can anyone help? I am hoping to go back to topic based work so it all fits in and links together, is this best?
