I recently put the following post in another thread and Sue suggested I start a new topic on this. Here's the post and Sue's response: QUOTE (emmajess @ Jul 5 2010, 21:00) I have a question, though. Next year I am moving from teaching my class of 20 to a position as EYFS leader in a 5 (5!!!!!! ) form entry primary school. I wonder if anyone has any comments or suggestions about how such a system might work in such a large setting with 5 teachers and 150 children? I'm wondering how much of a requirement there is, in terms of equality of opportunity, for the 5 classes to be doing broadly similar things. Or whether we should work as one huge group and if a couple o…

Read, Write Inc.

Hi all Just wondering if anyone uses the Read, Write inc. approach to literacy/phonics. I have heard rumblings about it being brought in at our school for the whole school, and don't know how this will affect my timetable and ethos in Reception. At present we use Letters and Sounds which I think is great, and by the spring 2 we split into groups which could include some from Yr 1/2 and some of our more able go to a higher phase. It is working really well and the 20 mins phonics fits in ok on a daily basis. I don't know much about Read Write inc, but have heard that it is an hour per day! This is really scaring me! How will I get the rest of my day to day stuff in, i…

Hi there, hearing alot about practitioners adding the 'must, could and should' into their planning. Would love to get it up abnd running for next term. Is anybody doing that with their reception class, and are you finding it useful. If anyone has an example of planning that includes that criteria, please could you post it on here, i would be most grateful xxxxx

do you display and discuss your learning objectives with the children for a focussed activity? Being observed by LA EYFS adviser tomorrow and HT has given a clecklist of reminders; one is to make sure that the LO are displayed on the whiteboard and discussed with the children. What should I do??????? aaaaggghhh

Not sure whether this is in the right section, but hope someone can help my addled brain. I am thinking about next year and have been told by my HT that I should initiate My Unique Story.I went on the intro course, but it did not really help. I understand that some pre-schools are doing this but it is not compulsory. Is it compulsory or advised in schools or optional? At present I have a "Special Book" which is a bit like a learning journal and contains photos and some obs (most go in a Profile folder), challenges, notes home about any topics etc and the reading record. It is also somewhere parents can comment on child's achievements and milestones and we can let p…

Reception Timetable

Hi I thought I would attach my timetable for everyone to have a look at and give feedback. I have been working on this now for the last two weeks. I work in a private school so the timetable I was originally given was as you can imagine way too formal and every lesson was in isolation (bit like a high school timetable) so I have changed it into this. It was really difficuly as we have specialist teachers for French and Music so certain bits have to be at certain times and don't get me started on how many playtimes we have!!!! Please could you give me feedback Many thanks timetable_2010.doc

Reception

Hi there everybody, I have recently joined and this will be my first post. Just been reading some of the topics, a real wealth of support out there. I'm in Reception next year a class of 28!!! I just need a little advice. There will be myself (teacher) and a full time Nursery Nurse. Is it right that i should not do whole class teaching? I feel it would be rather difficult when there are so widely apart developmentally. Also for every taught lesson (teacher led/Nursery nurse led), do i record what has been observed to enter in their learning journeys? Would love to know how you organise your day/week. It would be great to have a little insight on whe…

Hi! I am currently teaching abroad in an international school, and have been given the job of teaching ICT to children from age 2yr 6 months to 6 years. These children have English as a second language (or as a third language in some cases) and I have not taught ICT for 5 years! Help! Are there any resources out there that start right at the beginning i.e naming parts of the computer etc? Does anyone know of any good retailers that sell children appropriate computer mice? Anything you can tell me would be most appreciated! Thanksyou!
