Guided Reading

Hello, I have been working in the Foundation Stage for quite a while now, but I've always worked in a school under change - always good change, but always in Guided Reading. I've been told in the past to do it very formal to then completely Child Initiated. Now, I do Guided Reading on a Friday one group after another - to fit it into the day. Does anyone have a Guided Reading plan? Would you plan it seperatly to CLL and L&S? Has anyone got any ideas for Follow Up Activities? How many times a week would you do Guided Reading? Where do you fit it in in the day? Does anyone have a system that works..? Please help! Thanks

I have a child who joined my class last week. She came in elective mute but, perhaps as a result of the change in schools, she is now talking. Now that she is talking we now know that she is very poor in her abilities. Even though she is 5, she tells people she is 4 because that is as high as she can count. She does not know her colours or any sounds. The other children baby her and her speech and language has been assessed as that of a 2year 11 month olds. On approaching the SENCo I have been told that it is too late to do anything about it and she will have to go up to year 1 as normal. I suppose the real reason that I am posting this is because I feel an enormous …

Hi all, This is my first post on the forum, I signed up last week. I'm finishing my PGCE course and I've secured a job teaching reception in September! I have an introductory afternoon coming up where I get to meet my lovely bunch of P1's and need to plan some introductory/welcome activities to get them all excited to start school! I could really do with some help coming up with some ideas as I have them for an hour, feeling a little bit nervous! Thank you for your time in reading this, look forward to hearing from you :-) Rod

the form I have to fill in is asking me how long I will spend on my introduction and planary? And how long the children will soend doing the main activity. It is an electronic form so I am very tempted to delete the timings column. Surely the whole EYFS ethos means that timings will deoend on the interests and needs of the children during the session What would you do? Do you have to estimate timings? Thanks

Hey, I have an Foundation Stage Teacher interview looming next week, I have to do an activity of my choice with 6 children for no more than 20mins and prepare and present a 5~10 min presentation of what an effective early years class should look like. I had an interview last\week where I did a music activity but I didnt get the job so i'm reluctant to do the same activity again! also I'm not sure how to approach the presentation, I intended to do a powerpoint presentation but have been told there won't be facilities for that, just a flip chart! I'm stressing out a bit as I'm trying to update all my children's profiles for parents evening next week too so any good ideas w…

Mixed Aged Classes

Hi I am new to this today but was after some advice and help. I have recently got a post as reception, year 1 and year 2 teacher. I was after some help from people with similar or the same mixed aged classes on how they plan and arrange their classroom to suit all children. I have no access to an outside area unless it is supervised and I have never taught reception before. So any little pointers on planning or anything would be very much appreciated. Cheers.

Hi, I am new to the foundation stage forum and will be a new reception class teacher in september, I have been working in Year 1 for two years now and have been asked to move down to reception. From working in Year 1 i have a good knowledge of the EYFS profile and lots of activities and ideas for teaching reception children. I have been teaching in reception this past term for two days of the week, to get to grips with assessment and observations, however I am struggling to get my head around how to plan a session in reception including child initiated learning. I am presuming child initiated is where children choose their own area within the classroom whether this be the…

Listening To Readers

Hi Please help! In our school children's progress in reading seems to be the only way parents guage their children's overall progress. Historically children have always read to an adult twice a week once they are on reading books. These are taken home and generally parents are very eager to work with their children so that once they have read their book they expect a new one to appear in the folder! The children do not change their books by themselves-we do it when they have read to us and they then have a go at reading the next book 'cold' so we can see how their skills are coming on and work on new ones and things we have covered in J Phonics etc All very time con…
