Time To Ask For Help - Maths
by Guest- 3 replies

I am reslly struggling and so asking for help. I am currently a rec and Year 1 teacher. I taught this two years ago - and last year did straight rec, and since feb am back to a mixed class. The parents from the year 1 children want a formal curriculum- that what they had up until feb this year. My school uses the scholastic maths books - and I have been given the Year 1 book to do with my 10 yr 1 children - even though 3 are working at rec level. Basically my new head is coming in on wednesday to obs and wants my weekly and lesson plan - and I have no idea how to start, because I feel that I am being too formal, and basically using the book and then 'dumbing down' for…

Hi, I have posted this in the FSU forum but seems to be more happening here so thought I would try here too, wonder if anyone can help...... We are planning to start a FSU in September and wondered if anyone can offer some advice re ratios. We will have 12 YR chn and 12 YN chn at the start of the yr, and taking in more YN chn as the year goes on, and we usually gain 1 or 2 Yr chn too as the chn move around school locally. We are planning on have 1 CT and 2 qualified NNs but are confused as to how many chn we can have in a session in total. Some guidance appears to say 1:13 (so up to 39 chn in total with that levle of staffing) and other guidance seems to say you can h…

Whatever Next

We have been doing 5 little men in a flying saucer with Rec class this week and the children are really loving the space theme-thought I would do Whatever Next by Jill Murphy next week. Can anyone suggest any good ideas to develop this or point me in the direction of some useful resources please. We have set up a space role play area and I have a Story sack for Whatever Next to use- have trawled the internet but not found anything other than a powerpoint for the story. I think I am brain dead now and not even a drop of wine has passed my lips !! Any ideas gratefully received.

Im a reception teacher on the edge!!!! lol Firstly ofsted slated me for being too formal and not giving the children enough opportunity to make choices about their learning! So i made changes!!! Organising A Timetable?

I recently wrote about having a new group of nursery children in my Reception class which I have been somewhat panicing about and now I've come to the time to plan for them! Just wondered if anyone has either had this experience or has any advice on the following: Bearing in mind my nursery children are only in from 9-11.30 and the receptions obviously in all day, I really don't know where to start in setting out my timetable so that: a. the nursery experience all the areas of learning over the course of their mornings b. do the correct number of 'adult led' activities in these areas. c. the reception still get their 'time' in numeracy/ literacy/ o…

How Often Do You Meet As A Staff?
by Guest Cathryn1974- 8 replies

Hi I was just wondering how often you meet as a year group or phase with Nursery. I currently teach in Rec but am applying to be phase leader in Sept (over Nursery as well). I currently don't think we meet enough to discuss children's interests, obs, next steps etc. I think this could easily be a short daily thing and a longer year/phase meeting once a week. This way children are really being centre to our practice. Nobody else I work with seems to agree and they just put out random things in the environment that aren't really based on what the children are doing and plan weekly CLL and PSRN teaching sessions that are simply from DM. Let me know what you think…

Hi Our topic in my reception class for the next 3 weeks is that of 'markets'. I am really struggling for ideas and activities to set out for this topic! Our role play area will be set up like a market stall and for numeracy we are bringing in money and counting etc. We are also going to bring in healthy eating too but other than that we are a bit stuck. If anyone has any ideas especially for literacy I would really appreciate any input ) thanks a lot xx

How Long To Have Activities Out For
by Guest- 3 replies

Just a random quick question that has been concerning me a little but how long do you keep your activities out for? for example we plan indoor activities for the 6 areas of learning and then outdoors activities for the areas of learning. These activities are then out for the duration of the week being tweaked and added to depending on what the children roll with and show interest in. Does that sound about right? Thankies xx
