Hi, Having read the Learning, playing and interacting document, I was very interested in the comment about keeping focused activity time separate from child-initiated time to avoid the two conflicting. Having always been advised to do focused activities with individuals or small groups while the other children were involved in CI play this was quite a new concept for me (although it was more like this when I started teaching reception and I changed my methods following advisor visits!). However, with support from some lovely people on this forum, I decided to give it a go. So first thing we have one hour and fifteen mins of CI time indoors and outdoors with the childre…

Phonics....

Sorry if this is a really silly question (but I'm going to ask anyway!) My class are split into 4 groups (at the moment) for phonics. My TA and I each have a group while the other 2 groups read (look at books!) then we swap and the 2nd 2 groups work with us. This works really well, as far as having 4 smaller groups is concerned as I have found the children make better progress in smaller groups, and some are more confident to have a go, etc, in a smaller group. And of course the learning can be at the level needed more easily than if I had to do the whole class at once. Anyway... the 'reading' the other groups do is good as it is a quiet activity, which means the …

Hi everyone, I have recently managed to set up communication books with the many different child minders that some of our children go to, as I know we have to have good communication and links with other settings our children attend. Does anyone know if this includes after school clubs? We have 3 or 4 children that sometimes attend an after school club which is linked with the school but not held in the school. Some children just go once a week, some go more often. Does this club count as another setting and do they follow the EYFS? Any help would be great!

Help Please

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum so please bare with me. I am currently studying with ou, I work as a playleader at an after school club. After recently having an Ofsted inspection, they told us we need to be doing observations to link in with the eyfs. I am not getting much(any) support from management and have asked for new forms etc to be done, and i'm still waiting! My main predicament at the moment is that I need observations to complete my assignments for the Ou. I have some from when I was doing my nvq but their not very good, I'm really struggling and was hoping someone out there could help me in some way. Many thanks Kim

Everybody Writes

Hi, our school is having an 'Everbody Writes' day in a fortnight and I am completely out of ideas. The Literacy coordinator has had lots of ideas for higher up the school but very little for Reception - we basically have to get the children so inspired that all they want to do is write all day on any topic that I choose, oh and the parents have to be involved for a session too! Although some of the class love writing and it's hard to peel them away from the writing table, I've got another quite large group who avoid all attempts at mark-making whenever they can (including painting, shaving foam, chalks, brushes on the playground etc....) So does anyone have any really in…

Hi everyone, We are currently having a new fire station built next to our school so have decided to use this resource to link in with the children's learning. We are thinking about having a fire station topic for next half term, linking to people who help us. Does anyone have any ideas of activities, resources etc.. that we could use? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Jo
