Hi, I'm trying to devise a set of core books and rhymes for our Nursery class. I was wondering if others would share how they actually share these books with the children - do you read a different one each week/day or do you introduce them through a theme and then continue to read them throughout the year? Thanks Green Hippo x

Freeflow With Reception And Year 1

Does anyone combine reception and year 1 classes in freeflow? We are thinking of doing it as we have some very poor year 1 children who really need a more reception-type environment but we don't want to compromise our ratios in reception. Thanks for your time!

Hi, I am hoping someone can give me some advice, after working with nursery for six months the school in which I have been based since sept, (I am NQT)has decided the results are not good enough so have scrapped our foundation unit and gone back to seperate RECEPTION AND NURSERY! Myself and another NQT have been placed in charge of reception, the head has made it very clear we are to raise standards in literacy and numeracy. The head wants us to have discrete RML sessions and numeracy sessions, and bring reception back in line with the rest of school. I have no idea how to get the balance right between the heads requirements and the EYFS. We also have OFSTED looming an…

I work in a small primary school and each term we have a whole school topic. Down in Foundation Stage we use this pretty loosely as it is not always appropriate (this term was Ancient Egypt!) and obviously we follow the children's interests. Next term is 'Carnival chaos' which sounds great fun, I have a few ideas floating around in my head, making masks, dance, staging our own carnival..... Just wondered if any of you clever people had any good ideas! Kathryn

For some reason I find it hard to come up with exciting activities for children to do as an adult led task and then it is almost imposiible for children to do this in child initiated sessions. I am therefore calling on all the creative ones at there to share thier ideas!! I thank you all for reading this post - especially at this time of the year!! I am not particularly after christmas links as I think I am sorted in that department. Of course if you have some great ideas for Christmas I would love to hear those as well though. Thanks XXX

I am being asked to make the children self assess at the end of each SEAL topic - I think this is crazy and pointless. I have been told it has to be done to be re-accredited for Healthy Schools. Can anyone tell me what they do for Reception?
