My class love Moshi Monsters and I was thinking about doing a short topic on it. I really need to focus on developing the children's creative skills. Has anyone taught this topic? I can't find much online.

Cream of Tartar!

Hi, I still make my playdough with Cream of Tartar using the microwave method but I am now struggling to buy C of T. Has anyone now got the same problem? Instead of buying it in a small tub I can only buy it in 6 little sachets of 1 teaspoon in each sold by Dr Oetker at roughly £1. It`s going to get very expensive at £1 for 6 teaspoons. I have looked in Sainsburys, Tesco, Morrisons, Booths and Lidl. Not tried Asda or Aldi.

Hi all, Does anyone have a simple yet effective way/template/format of sharing info with parents. We do obs on our focus children and then have a 1:1 meeting with the parents do they can gain a better understanding of what their child demonstrates and we make suggestions of next steps and things to try at home. Our current format is a bit dated ; need some fresh ideas. Be very grateful if anyone can share. The parents this year are already craving information, well the majority! Thanks in advance

I'm just working through the various trackers/reports I have from the pre-schools/nurseries which have sent children to me this year. I'm finding myself monumentally confused! They have made an assessment against the different aspects and I have the following words to work with: Setting 1: low, secure, high Setting 2: working well, working within, working very well Setting 3: emerging, developing, secure or emerging, succeeding, secure depending on which key person has completed the report Setting 4: hasn't used the age bands but has assessed their children against the ELGs using emerging/expected/exceeded The tracker our LA send out has low/secure/high within each…

As a school we have started RWi this year. Logistically its been hard work, but already seeing the benefits. My Question is : when your children are learning set 1 sounds, where do they do their writing bit. We have been photocopying the relevant page of the book - but this seems excessive? Does anyone have a phonics book(?) for each child and only write the relevant letter in the corner/middle of the page ?? and then use one page a day? Any RWi schools out there ?? Thanks

Hi all, In North Yorkshire (it may be the same for everyone) we have been told that the new Gov baseline on entry testing is going to be statutory as of Sep 2016. That is, perform some sort of test possibly on a computer!!! for a 4 year old that produces an assessment value in order to track children accurately from reception to year 6. We have to make our choice of which baseline test to have in school by January, the trouble is the 'list' of options is not available until early next year. bit concerned A) about the obvious issues around testing 4 year olds and B) is this a purposeful move to make us feel like we have an option only to impose something on us because we …

Hi all, This week my FS team and I have been looking back and analysing our on entry to nursery data and tracking the children all the way through to their on entry to reception following a few discrepancies. What has come up in discussion is writing. How can a judgement of emerging, developing or secure be made in writing 22-36mths ('distinguishes between the different marks they make') when there is just one statement? I have looked back at previous posts about the stages of writing development which was useful but still find it hard to explain to the team what a child that is emerging/developing/secure in writing within the age band 22-36mths looks like? Any advice …

Phonics Lesson Observation

Good Morning Everyone, Please can I have some of your kind thoughts and suggestions... I have my first dreaded PM observation on Friday this week and the HT has asked to observe a phonics session. Obviously she wants to see how the HA are being stretched - 2 of my chn can recognise the phase 2 sounds but can not identify the names of the letters - they can also segment and blend simple CVC words. We started Phase 2 last week and on Friday I will be reviewing i, n, m, d. Any thoughts on something WOW that you have done or witnessed would be much appreciated!

I am feeling a little overwhelmed by trying to get any of baseline assessment for my new reception cohort. I have pre-school records for just over half of them. They do all have some form of assessment about which age-band they are in. I will obviously use these although I confess to being sceptical about those records from one place - all 6 children are apparently meeting or exceeding the ELG in the prime areas and yet the written notes say things like 'X didn't spend much time at nursery due to having huge tantrums' for me - that isn't 'expected for Managing feelings and behaviour' so I'll be looking at those particularly ones more closely. However, my question - I…
