Literacy Planning!
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi! I am a year one teacher in a two form entry school, so plan with another teacher. Our focus for this year is to improve writing standards, and we are being observed this week by the Head. I'm not sure if we are planning correctly for the children's writing. The children are currently doing a poetry unit and are writing a new poem every day. I always thought that writing should come as a sequence - reading, reading for writing, speaking and listening for writing and then writing. Should the children be doing this, or are we doing it correctly? Any advice welcome please and thank you!! Becksyboo

Phonics Display

Hi Guys, My kids are starting on phase 2 phonics on our return, is it fine to incorporate letters and sounds with jolly phonics. I love the idea of using jolly phonics being so multi sensory etc? And another thing, i' reaally want to make my phonics display interactive to reinforce the letters learnt, and so that its a self chosen activity availble at all times. Has anyone done anything interactive already with some ideas. I was thinking of velcroing letters and they match it to the pics, but surely there must be something better than that out there. Any ideas would be great misspink xxx

Set Format For Recording Assessment
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi all, I am new to Reception and am finding it hard to establish a format I am happy with of recording my assessments (Especially one that is manageable). Does anyone have any examples of successful ways to record. I already do tick sheets with aach of the areas on and with all 9 scales, but it does not seem to tell me much. Does anyone use individual recording sheets for each child and if so, do you tick it each time yo see it? is this manageable? Please help!! All ideas are greatly received Thanks Everyone x

Group Challenge Ideas
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi I was wondering if anyone has some good ideas, as my brain does not seem to be working today! I want to introduce some group challenges for the children in my reception class which encourages them to work together to solve a problem. This doesn't have to be PSRN based as my intention is to build their relationships and skills for working with others, amongst many other things such as thiking skills and use of language. Does anyone have any great ideas I could use please? Thanks xx

Parent Info About Eyfs

Hi, does anyone have or know a link to save me some time? I've a hard core of parents with older children that had a very formal reception year with the highly thought of, previous reception teacher. I'm being seen as the teacher that just lets them play, lots of mumbles and grumbles about why aren't they doing lessons, why don't they have their own seat and table, where are the books and folders with worksheets? I wrote a new intro pack in the summer with explanation of the 6 areas of learning, practical based learning etc. I've talked to the parents that have queried the changes with me. My head and EYFS leader are really pleased with, and support what I'm…

Hi all, Over the half-term I have completed the on-entry assessments for the children in our Nursery class - using both evidence from learning journals and teacher assessment. I was wondering how much evidence (obs/photos etc) other settings have collected for each child so far? I have always followed the advice of only writing down significant achievements and things that you have not noticed before or will not remember for short obs in order to keep in manageable. We also do 1 long obs each half term. Does anyone have a different system to gather on-entry information for their children? And do you have a way of monitoring the observations to ensure that each child has …

We're just having our shelter for our outdoor classroom completed next week. I wondered how many of you, who have a free flow system in their Reception class, base themselve outside with a group of children? or do you supervise from inside?

Browsing around the forum and from previous experiences in school I'm getting the impression that the reception class in my current school is a lot more rigid and structured than most, but I could be getting a false impression so I just wanted to collect ideas/responses from people in one topic. Currently the reception teacher plans a literacy and a numeracy session everyday using the same planning format as the rest of the school. All the children all do an adult led group activity in both of these everyday. They also have a SEAL lesson, RE (it's a CofE school), 2 PE slots, and then they follow the old style units (transport, people who help us etc.) every week, plus…

Hi, I'm sorry, this is a really obvious and silly question. I only started in Foundation in September and have really got going with the phonics. I now need to start to differentiate as some children are picking up the letters much quicker than the others etc... I have one other adult in class. How is the best way to do it? Lizzi
