Am I Doing It All Wrong?

Hi, I had my first lesson observation today with the 'new head.' She admits to knowing little about EYFS but brought up two points for discussion during my feedback... I did 'fight my corner' but just wanted your opinions- doesn't take much to make me doubt myself!!! 1. Should I let the children access outdoor provision without an adult to supervise them? Some mornings I don't have another member of staff and therefore don't use the space... the gate to the yard can't be locked and the fence is low and I consider it risky... she wants me to have 'free flow' all the time... she suggested I buy a bike lock to secure the gate. 2. How much of my provision should be li…

Assembly On 'who Am I'

I've just found out is my reception class's assembly on Friday! It's got to based on the theme of 'understanding who am i'. I've been thinking it through and talking with other staff members. These are the collective ideas so far: Start with a door and a gatekeeper. Children arrive saying 'knock, knock' audience and gate keeper respond 'whose there'. In groups of countries the children say who they are and which country they come from e.g I am John I come from portugal'. I thought they could be in the colours of their counties flag, holding their flag aswell?. Then they get welcomed through the gate (of the world???) At the end we need to sing a song thought about…

Hi can anyone guide me down the right path in finding computerised observation sheets where you can add photographs. I saw one at an Early Years conference but can't remember where they came from.

I've only got 14 children but in a tiny classroom, so we really need to use our outdoor area but I'm finding it really hard not to end up with 13 children outside with me and just 1 inside with TA! For the first 2 weeks, when they were only in mornings, we had two groups of 7 - one inside and one out and then we changed over for session 2. Since they started staying all day we've tried to offer them free choice of indoor or outdoor activities but all the boys (12) and one of the girls want to be outdoors! Should we try to restrict them? Any helpful suggestions please? Thanks

Hello everyone, I ve only recently registered on here and hoping for some help. I am finding it very hard to find information and evidence on how to evaluate and use ICT to support children's learning and development. It might just be me, but just can not think of anything. I am also having a bit of a struggle with EYCLO 9 and 10? Any help would be great. I hope this course its not as hard as i am finding it right now. Andrea

Hi, Looking for some advice with following up next steps from learning stories. Each week myself and my 2 TAs complete 2 or 3 long obs or 'learning stories' this, of course, creates between 6 and 9 next steps for the children concerned. Some of these are specific e.g. enhancing an area of provision or providing a focused activity to meet the next step. However, some are more general e.g. support and encourage Johnny to talk through his activities by playing alongside him and modelling language and using open-ended questioning which all staff need to be aware of in case they become involved in Johnny's independent play. Last year (and so far this year!) we have been findi…

I would like to find out how many Nurseries that are part of a primary school assess their Nursery children on the first 3 statements on the Profile or do you use the Developmental Matters only in Nursery. Up to now, I have assessed our Nursery children on DM's and the first 3 statements. But now wondering if we will stick to DM's in Nursery and let Reception start their baseline with the first 3 statements. What do you all do?

Planning With Children

Hi, I am looking into ways to involve children in the planning of their learning but am not sure how to do this! Once we have observed them, etc, and decided on a mini topic, I want to use their input to plan what they want to learn about. In the past, I have tried asking them at the start of topics, but I don't seem to get very far - perhaps with one or two very able children, but the others never seemed to 'get it'! Maybe it was how I was going about it, I don't know... Anyway, I found this about Talking and Thinking Books on the Mindstretchers site, and wondered if anyone has used this idea or knows anything about it? http://www.mindstretchers.co.uk/article…
